Work hasn't paid me ....

justflewinfromthewindycity · 30/08/2024 07:41

I posted last week about a new job as a receptionist/no breaks after 8 hours/no notice of shits etc
I quit after a day and today should have been pay day.
They haven't paid me
I should of received £100
I had no notice period
Is it legal for them not to pay me?

Anyone ?
Should I of been paid or not ?

Well you should have been paid but leaving after a day might have messed up their payroll processes. Politely message them to ask for an update.

justflewinfromthewindycity · 30/08/2024 07:51

They replied saying they don't have to pay me because I didn't complete a full week in work
But I had no notice period so I don't get it

You quit after 8 hours, were you even in their payroll system yet? They might not even have had your bank details to pay you.

On principle you should be paid for the time you worked but only you know if it's worth the time and energy chasing this. I personally wouldn't want ever again to talk to a job I hated so much I quit on the first day and would put the energy towards getting my next job.

You didn't have to click your fingers because you hadn't had a reply after 5 minutes. That's ott.
Yes you should have been paid and someone has obviously made an error. Contact your line manager and let them know, but give them chance to answer.

TokyoSushi · 30/08/2024 07:54

Yes you should have been paid, but if they haven't, and you quit after one day, then I think the chances of you receiving any money are fairly unlikely...

No that's wrong, unless they told you that you were on an unpaid training day. Speak to Citizen's Advice Bureau, I'm willing to bet that a letter from them will get the money into your bank account.

justflewinfromthewindycity · 30/08/2024 07:55

@Xiaoxiong it's just the principle of it all
They are so shady as a company with the no breaks etc and lack of hours between shifts etc
Plus I need the money as now I have no job
They had my details for two weeks before I started and was on the payroll app but now I'm not

It’s unusual to have no notice period, isn’t it? Did you have a contract or letter of employment?

justflewinfromthewindycity · 30/08/2024 07:55

@Timeforaglassofwine sorry it was meant to come across like that ...

OP posts:
justflewinfromthewindycity · 30/08/2024 07:56

@SheilaFentiman no they gave me no contract
I signed a letter with my bank details etc

Hopefully someone will be able to advise on the legalities, but realistically you might have to cut your losses.

I really hope they cough up.

justflewinfromthewindycity · 30/08/2024 08:13

They replied saying because I haven't handed my work shirt back
Until I hand that in I won't be paid
It's used so i assumed they wouldn't want it

OP posts:
SheilaFentiman · 30/08/2024 08:20

Err why wouldn’t they want it? Assume they don’t throw them out at the end of each day and either employees wash their own or they have a laundry service.

You've heard of washing machines?

The last thread had you working two days, not one. I think it must have been another thread with a different name where you said anything about breaks or shift start times.

justflewinfromthewindycity · 30/08/2024 08:36

It was 2 days but only 1 paid as the first was just shadowing and a tour
The 2nd day I was on reception

Yes I have heard of washing machines but the shirt I received was in a brand new packet so didn't think it would be re used to a new employee due to general hygiene

Where is the shirt now?

i agree with pp about citizens advice. id also say the first dah also counts as you were at work so it is two days they owe you. And when you get the money report them for their dodgy business practices.

DeclutteringNewbie · 30/08/2024 08:40

Well, give them the shirt back and they’ll pay you.

(It’s “should have”, by the way.)

justflewinfromthewindycity · 30/08/2024 08:42

@TheBottomsOfMyTrousersAreRolled I've just put it in the washing machine, will iron it and take it back in

Wash the shirt and send it back with a note saying, "I'd appreciate being paid for my one day. Thank you."

Elphamouche · 30/08/2024 09:05

you should be paid for two, shadowing and a tour is day 1 of employment. Get onto CAB.

Also, withholding a whole days pay over a shirt? Absolutely not. £20 at max.

SweetShreddedCoconut · 30/08/2024 09:08

I'm afraid you will have to chalk this one up to experience. I would reply letting them know what you think and leave a review online.

TravellingSpoon · 30/08/2024 09:29

Legally they should pay you, and hopefully they will if you return the shirt.

However in practice you may find it a real struggle to get the to pay you after 2 days of work and just walking out. You may just have to chalk it up to experience and move on to the job you left this one for. You should also do some research on zero hours contracts.

DreamW3aver · 30/08/2024 09:37

Make sure you get confirmation when you take the shirt back. I used to work somewhere with a uniform and I know it wasn't cheap to replace when leavers didn't return their items, it was easy to wash and save them for future staff.
