What’s a food you’ve never tried?

For no particular reason?

DS just told me he had the nicest pot noodle ever earlier🤣 The flavour did sound quite nice, then I realised I’ve never had a pot noodle for some reason!

My brother has never eaten an orange.
Apparently they are the wrong colour...

AntigoneFunn · 29/08/2024 20:28

Snails

Offal although I'm ok with liver, kidneys, tongue, oxtail etc. I baulk at heart, tripe, endouiette etc.

Insects

I was offered fermented shark but declined. I have had dried shark meat though and it was rank.

Pickled herrings do not appeal

Winkles, cockles, mussels- shellfish gribblers are an absolute no no.

Jellied eel

There isn't a vegetable I wouldn't try- however there's a couple I try to avoid like Bok Choi and Okra.

softmauve · 29/08/2024 20:29

Corned beef
Mushy peas
Spam
And I never want to.

@MillshakePickle Wait - what? You've never tried fried bread??

I mean, I'm up there with you on the oysters and dragon fruit, but fried bread? You don't know what you're missing.

I keep getting told that. I just can't wrap my head around why, you'd do that to bread for breakfast. Why not just toast until the perfect golden brown and slather it in a copious amount of niace salty butter?

I might have to give it a go at least once. I am fairly adventurous with food.

Any recommendations for fried bread or how to? Yes, I'm that clueless.

I'll have some on Sunday and report back. We'll call it a MN social experiment.

Oxtail is absolutely not offal.

Or maybe it is....but my god cooked super low and slow, and it's up there with chicken feet! Super delicious and unlike any other food

Oh sure -I love it! But I’m aware it comes under the ‘lips and arseholes’ category for a lot of people. !

aintnospringchicken · 29/08/2024 20:41

Oysters
Liver
Tripe
KFC

Daisydoodog · 29/08/2024 20:41

Just seen somebody mention spam. Now that is up there with one of my favorites! Has to be cooked though. Anyone else love/hate it?

If it counts, I've never had a KFC. It isn't that I never eat fast food, it's just that there always seems to be something more appealing than KFC in situations where I might want that kind of thing, e.g.motorway services. I do intend to try it one day; there will come an occasion when the stars align for it!

Don't bother.

I've tried most of the things listed so far. Most were worth trying, many I readily eat, some were "Ok, I don't need to get that ever again". KFC definitely falls into that last category. I've tried it 3 times, approximately once every 10-15y, and each time it was utterly foul. Overspiced, undercooked, and hideously greasy.

Twinkletwinklelil · 29/08/2024 20:52

A lot of these have got me craving now!!!

but mine is.. marmite

SlothOnARope · 29/08/2024 20:52

Snails
Brains
Tripe
Fried grasshoppers
Fried Mars bars

rzb · 29/08/2024 20:56

@AntigoneFunn Ox heart is pretty good, and I think less 'offally' than kidney. I've had tripe a few times in restaurants and really enjoyed those meals, but I've not cooked it myself.
@Daisydoodog Spam/similar is one of our go-to things in tins which makes a decent meal when camping and tastes great after a long day outdoors. I wouldn't contemplate making a spam-based dinner when at home, tho.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 29/08/2024 20:57

Oysters
Foie gras

MrsStottlemeyer · 29/08/2024 19:24

Loads. Off the top of my head,
chicken nuggets,
pot noodle,
most seafood,
hotdogs,
pate,
most offal,
blancmange,
omelette.

You've never eaten a chicken nugget. Ever??

HansHolbein · 29/08/2024 20:58

Well black pudding for religious reasons.

Never tried pate… just looks horrible

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/08/2024 21:01

Most of the things I've never tried come under the more unusual animals or parts of animals umbrella - and I've no intention of trying them (don't eat other meet either).

I've not had bubble tea - that sounds disgusting.

And also things that are made unnecessarily unhealthy eg using a donut in place of a burger bun.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/08/2024 21:04

A question. Someone has mentioned fried Mars bars - when you fry a Mars
Bar, is it battered? I quite like the idea of a melted Mars bar with ice cream, but I would probably use the microwave rather than fry it.

Definitely past the asshole, which is helpful

Yeah it's buttered. Had it in Glasgow

puppyparent · 29/08/2024 21:08

Marmite
Goose

MrsStottlemeyer · 29/08/2024 21:08

@papadontpreach2me
No, my Dad did a Jamie Oliver on us as children about chopped and shaped meat and the smell of the McDonalds ones make me heave anyway. My DC have never had them either.

Enko · 29/08/2024 21:10

I've never tried Haggis

Honestly though I will try most things once..

Don't bother it's rank.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 29/08/2024 21:13

all and any offal

the thought of it gives me the boak

also at the other end of the scale plant milks and cheese substitutes make me feel likewise

MrsStottlemeyer · 29/08/2024 21:15

Subway- it smells funny and I've now made it a thing to see if I can live my whole life without eating one.

Oh yes, Subways smells awful.
