Helpwithfinances · 29/08/2024 10:56

I'm just over 5 feet 9 and my exh is 6 feet tall. Son is over 6 feet at 13 and 10 year old DD over five feet

I know they are going to be tall - but how tall! What was your experience?

As to when they stop growing, if you realise their feet haven't grown for a while it's a clue. I think with us feet stopped growing up to a couple of years before the rest of them did. DD was in her current shoe size at the age of 10, DS by the age of 12, having just about done age=shoe size at 11...

I hit my final shoe size (until pregnancy later increased it again!) at 12. Finished growing at 19.

@rainydogday my DS2 was the same, he did keep growing but much more slowly after 15/16. He's now 200cm (6'6 and 3/4), we think he's finally stopped growing but he's 19 in a few weeks. His feet haven't grown in a few years though - thank god.

I’m 5ft 4 which is tall for my family, DH is 6ft 1, our DS is 6ft 4. One of his best mates has a Dad who is also 6ft 1 and a Mum who is 5ft, he is 5ft 5 and his brother is 5ft 6, this lad is in his twenties and is really annoyed that he has inherited his Mums side for height.

HiFillyJonk · 30/08/2024 00:32

I'm 5ft 5
My mum is 5ft 7
My dad is 5ft 10
I used to be the tallest girl in my junior school but just stopped growing at 12.
My daughter is only 6 but is below the 0.4th centile in height and more than head and shoulders smaller than her classmates, so I'd be amazed if she grows taller than me.

Do people genuinely think 5'5 is tall?

coxesorangepippin · 30/08/2024 02:12

I'm 5'5
DH is 6ft

DS is ten and 5ft already
DD is 7 and 4 ft

We'll see

Why on an 'If you are tall?' thread then?

BananaGrapeMelon · 30/08/2024 04:06

I'm 5'7 and DH is 6'3
DS1 is 6'4
DD is 6'
DS2 is 5'10 and still growing

Mathsbabe · 30/08/2024 07:44

I'm 5'3" DH is 6'2"
DD is 5'7" DS is almost 5'7"

He was low centiles from birth and did not have a growth spurt as a teenager. Fortunately his feet reach the ground.

JumpinJellyfish · 30/08/2024 07:52

Usually kids come out between their parents’ heights in terms of relationship to the average.

I think of it by reference to the opposite sex parent - so if the mum is tall (ie above average height (5’5)) and the dad is average (5’10) then their sons will end up taller than their dad but daughters will be shorter than their mum (again, on average).

And if the mum is below average and dad above, sons will likely be shorter than dad; daughters will likely be taller than mum.

I’m 5’7 and DH is 5’11 so we are expecting DS to be 6’ and DD to be 5’6 or 5’7, which also reflects the centiles they are on now.

But environmental factors play a big part too which is why siblings’ heights vary.

Nottodaty · 30/08/2024 07:56

My mum and dad both 5.10

I am the same height, both my sisters are shorter (5.6/7)

Im taller than my husband - both my girls are 5.4 - it’s strange to me as I’m so much taller! But it looks like my husbands Mum genes and my great granny’s have both sneaked in both around 5ft.

saffronflower · 30/08/2024 07:57

I am 5'10"
DH is 5'10"

DS (age 17) is 6'1" stopped growing
DS (age 15) is 5'9" still growing

I don't think it's possible to predict. DH and I are the same heights as you and your DH. However, ds is 5'10-1/2" and dd 5'4" (just). DS was always 50th centile for height and DD was 90th.

DD was one of the tallest throughout primary school and at the start of Y7. Her periods started aged ten and a half and she grew no more than two inches after that. Paradoxically, I was one if the smallest when starting in Y7 (or its equivalent), my periods didn't start until I was 14 and by the end of Yr 10 I was one of the taller ones.

greengreyblue · 30/08/2024 08:15

DH 6ft 4
ME 5ft 5
DD1 5ft 4(adult)
DD2 5ft 3(adult)
You can’t be taller with each generation or we’d all be giants by now!

As I said, environmental factors also play a part, which is why siblings often end up different heights.

But the mid-parental height calculation is a good starting point and is used by doctors to eg assess whether there are likely to be growth issues with a child.

Ozanj · 30/08/2024 09:42

DH and his DB are short 5 8 and 5 6- but grew up in India and had every illness going so it’s the equivalent of 6 ft+ in the UK. Sil is 5 6. DH’s ex was 5 7. DN is 6 ft at 14 and still growing. DSD is 6 ft 2.

I’m also 5 7 and so far my son (who is 4) has tracked 50-60th centile for height.

Floralnomad · 30/08/2024 09:53

I’m 5’8” , husband is 6’3” , son is 6’3” daughter is 5’5” ( at a push ) she got the short gene .

annonymousse · 30/08/2024 10:28

I'm 5'10. I'm now the shortest one in our family. ExH is 6'2.

DH is 6'2 and his ex about 5'7. DSD is 5'6 and DSS is 6'5

aintnospringchicken · 30/08/2024 10:49

I'm 5ft 8 and DH is 5ft 10.
Adult DD is 5ft 7(was 5ft 6 when she was 11yrs old)
Adult DS is 6ft 2

AddictedtoCrunchies · 30/08/2024 10:55

I'm 5ft 10
ExDH is 6ft 1

DS16 is 6ft 5 and built like a tank. 15 stone of legs, shoulders and lean muscle.

Was 10lb 6 born and just grew and grew. Always in clothes a couple of years ahead. Used to full out a bit then shoot up almost overnight.

Eats constantly but I think that's a teenager thing. Can sleep 12hrs straight through if not longer.

He's bloody luscious too Grin

Agree - I'm average height for a female (5'4) and DH is below average (5'7). I think DS will be taller than DH (calculators predict 5'9/10) and DD just below me (5'3).

That fits with their current centiles (50-75 for DS and 25-50 for DD) and also the fact that DS has my build (very slender) and DD has DH's (more stocky; DH is overweight though DD is a healthy weight, though near upper end).

BlastedPimples · 18/03/2025 07:47

My dd is 5ft 10. I'm 6ft. Exh is 6ft 3.

Dd is cheesed off she's not taller than me. I think she's the perfect height.

chubbychihauhau · 18/03/2025 07:49

I’m 5’9, her dad is 6’1. My daughter is 11 and is 5’6 and size 7 feet

Rubyupbeat · 18/03/2025 07:59

I knew mine would be tall. Husband and I both 6ft, but on my mums side of the family all the boys are tall, well over 6ft 2.
My boys are 6ft 5.
