If you are tall - did your children grow to be?

I'm just over 5 feet 9 and my exh is 6 feet tall. Son is over 6 feet at 13 and 10 year old DD over five feet

I know they are going to be tall - but how tall! What was your experience?

OP posts:
Shezlong · 29/08/2024 12:33

I'm 5'10, DH is 6'1
DS (not adult yet) is 6'5
DD1 (adult) is the littlest at 5'8
DD2 (young teen) is 5'9

Weirdly in each of our own families, only DH and I are the tall ones. My mum is 5'2 for example.

Florawest · 29/08/2024 12:35

Me 5 to 11, ex h 5ft 12
dd 5ft 8 (9 lbs 7 at birth)
ds adult 6 ft 4 ( 10 lbs at birth)
ds age 18 6ft 7 (only 6lbs 11 at birth)

Shoe size me 8
ex 9
dd 7 to 7.5
sons 12, 12

SevernWonders · 29/08/2024 12:35

I'm same height as you and XH is similar to your XH - as adults now, DS is 6' 4" and DD is 5' 7".

Could have gone either way as one of their grandfathers was 5' 6" and the other 6' 2"

I am 6'1", ex 5'1".
Sons are 6'3" and 5'6".
One blonde. One brown.
Built totally differently - but both are clearly one side of family or the other, they both look near identical to the two grand fathers...but totally different from each other.
Genes eh?

ScienceGreek · 29/08/2024 12:41

Dh is 6’5, I’m 5’6

Dd is only 4 but already one of the tallest at nursery.
I remember the midwives commenting how long she was when she was born.
Ds is 1.5 years and looks like he will be a tall lad, he’s taller than most kids at playgroups.

bigyellowduster · 29/08/2024 12:42

Me 5'8" (I'm old though, so was considered tall)

Ex 5'10" - son 6'5"
DH2 6'2" - son 6'2"

So basically it's all guesswork!

HauntedBungalow · 29/08/2024 12:43

My kids' red books had a page where I could enter mine and xdh heights and work out what height the kid would be. Two of mine are taller than that, one is bang on.

Ime quite a lot of young people 18-25 are taller than would be expected given the height of their parents. I think it's a combination of vaccination programmes, health initiatives like sure start and easy access to a variety of nutritious food. Be interesting to see how that pans out with current kids and teens now families have less money to spend on food and fuel and kids had access to vaccination programmes and sports and other leisure activities curtailed for a fairly long time during covid

Bunnycat101 · 29/08/2024 12:53

I am fascinated by this because I have a very tall husband and I’m average height. So far I have one child who is very tall (always been over 90th centile) and one who is short (always less than 25th) which I’ve found a bit odd) as not clear how the genetic mix has worked.

Flatulence · 29/08/2024 13:11

My mum was 5ft 6ins, my dad 5ft 8ins.

I (female) am 6ft. My brother is 6ft 3ins.

Genetics are weird 🤣

Manasprey · 29/08/2024 13:16

5'9. There about 3 or girls my height in school. We were freaks.
Dh 5'11.
Ds about 5'7 at 15. He's smaller than his friends, even though they have smaller parents. Ds does slouch though.
Dd no idea. 5'3? She's got bigger boobs than I did at her age. I just had height.

Same! I'm 5'9, DH is 6'2. DC14 is 6'2 and always been tall for his age but DC12 is tiny and always has been compared to her age group.

Waitingfordoggo · 29/08/2024 13:33

Genes are complicated I think. DH is average height, I’m shorter than average. We have a DS of 6ft and a DD of 5ft 1

I think they are both at their full adult height now. DD is nearly 19 - she stopped growing at 12/13 😂 DS is 16 and I know some boys continue to grow past that age but DS was fairly early to puberty so I suspect he’s done now.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 29/08/2024 13:36

I'm 5ft11, DH 5ft10. Fully grown DSs are 6ft2 and 6ft3. Boys generally tend to be taller than their mum so not surprised that ours are a few inches taller than me.

Claysta · 29/08/2024 13:37

I’m 6ft 2, DH 6ft, DD (13) is 5ft 7 and DS (14) is 5ft 6 but currently on a growth spurt.

FooFighter99 · 29/08/2024 13:38

I'm 6ft, Dh is 5ft9 and DD is 5ft6 at 12!

My dad was tall at 6ft3 and my brother is 6'6 so she definitely get's it from my side of the family

turkeyboots · 29/08/2024 13:38

I'm tallish at 5 ft 7 and DH is 5Ft 9. So not giant, but my DDad is 6ft3 and brothers are 6ft5.
DS is on track to be 6ft, he's 14 and 5ft8 right now and only just started growing. He got my family genes. Poor DD got DHs and is taller that MiL and Sil, but at 5ft4 is tiny to my family. Genes are odd.

BlastedPimples · 29/08/2024 13:39

I am 6ft. Exh is 6ft 3.

Ds1 aged 19 is 6 ft 3.

Dd aged 17 is 5 ft 10. She's annoyed she's unlikely to reach 6ft.

Ds2 aged 15 is 6 ft.

Ds3 aged 12 is 5 ft 4.

Ivyy · 29/08/2024 12:26

@TeenagersAngst Can I ask when your dd stopped growing?

I thought it was supposed to be a year or so after periods start, but it's been 18 months and dd is still growing, she's had a really rapid growth spurt over the last few months (combined with putting on some weight she's upset she has stretch marks in various places that sometimes seem to appear overnight)

As a baby she was always 99th centile for height, predicted height was 5ft 11 same as me but I think she's going to go past that

She's 15 this year and I think she stopped growing last year. Started her periods at 11. She was way off the charts as a baby (130th centile), was my height by y7. She has size 9.5/10 feet.

We've always been super positive about her height, I would rather she had stopped at under 6' but there's nothing we can do about it. She is fine about her height, definitely helped by the fact the boys seem to love it!

spikeandbuffy24 · 29/08/2024 14:16

My mum was 5ft9, her brother 6ft3, my dad 6ft2
I'm 5ft 10, my male cousins are 6ft4 and 6ft2

I carried on for a while
Period started age 9, was 5ft 8 at 12 and then grew another 2 inches

Namechange8463 · 29/08/2024 15:28

There are quite good calculators for predicting future height online, which take into account a child's current age and height and parents' height. Obviously don't take into account nutrition, body fat nor other environmental factors.

I reckon they will be quite accurate for my DC. I'm average height at 5'4 and DH is below average at 5'7 (most of his family are short, though has an outlier brother!).

DD takes after DH's side for build and DS takes after mine. DD is currently between 25 and 50th percentile for height and DS between 50 and 75th.

The calculators give an adult height of 5'3 for DD and 5'9/10 for DS, which I reckon will be near spot-on. Obviously who knows what the future holds, but it fits so far.

WingingIt101 · 29/08/2024 15:54

Dad is 6ft 7 and my Mum is 5ft 10

I'm 5ft 8 (but had a condition that inhibited my growth that wasn't found til I was mid puberty so should prob have been taller!)

Brother 6ft 8

Of my own children (dh is 6ft1) my eldest is on the 99th centile for height and youngest is 25th centile....

Bigearringsbigsmile · 29/08/2024 15:56

I'm 5' 10'
Dh 6' 1"

Adult sons sre 6' 8 and 6' 1"

Singleaftermarriage · 29/08/2024 16:00

My dad is 6ft 5, my mum is 5ft 1. I'm 5ft 11 (f), my 2 brothers are 6ft2 and 6ft4
My exh is 6ft 7
My DD is just 12 and is 5ft 9.

Waspie · 29/08/2024 16:05

I'm 5'9" and DP is 5'11". DS is 16 and 6'5". He says he still has more growing to do but I really hope he doesn't.
