But I know many are ruined by chains. Does anyone know Oxford who can recommend anywhere please

Haven't lived there for years, but maybe the Turf or the Bear?

Those are the two that immediately came to my mind as well!

Of those I prefer the Turf: nicer place to sit. Don't know what the food is currently like though.
Or if it's full then the King Arms.

Those mentioned are definitely cosy, (though the KA isn’t, unless it’s changed a lot since my student days?), but it depends if you’re happy with standard pub grub, or are looking for something more special. I’m pretty sure the Turf is actually owned by a chain, too, though remains characterful. Probably the Bear, too…?

Where is your concert?

Thanks those pubs look absolutely perfect I'm leaning toward the turf. It's at new Oxford play house.
We are by train.

I would book ahead as it always gets very crowded! I see it is now owned by a chain but I hope that it retains its character.

Photodad fortunately I suspect these places have listing on them so they can't literally change them or rip out what's there.. I just find them to be unloved, a distant chain boss, revolving managers and no one who really cares about them.
However, the turf looks v good and the menu looks good.

There’s also the Royal Oak on Woodstock Road.

Over thank you.
The turf doesn't seem to be taking booking so will have to see
