Anyone else miss just turning up?

These days it feels like you've got to download an app to book in a fart! I really miss just turning up somewhere, paying, without everything shoehorned into tight slots.

Anyone with a fluctuating condition I guess?

Yep

Some booking and app systems are great, for example on holiday recently in Italy running for a train and booking the tickets as I ran on my trainline app!
But other things seem to taking forever and you are signing in and out of app's and payment systems like a demeted tech assistant most days.
My most hated is buying something online for like a tenner then having to go and confirm in the banking app then go back to the sales page!! Insanity.
Sometimes it makes we just want to cry the time I spend in these things.

I agree about the ease of using public transport abroad but the approve in banking app thing is also very welcome here, it takes about 5s (all I have to do is put in my banking PIN the apps switch back and forth automatically) and gives greatly increased security.

I don't feel as if I am affected by this at all. Can't figure out why.

@Uriahsnose are you one of those Moderns who do everything with your phone? Or do you abhor the outside world and smartphones?

I’m not an old fuddy-duddy, I understand we have to use apps to book stuff. But I agree with others on this thread, they takes a lot of the spontaneity out of life.

I’ve booked tickets for an event at Wembley and the Ovo Arena app is hideous. I’m hoping I can get logged in before the event 🤞🏼

And as mentioned upthread, even 20 years ago, you had to book Santa Special steam trains several months in advance by phone as soon as the phone booking lines opened. Now you have to do it online

I never had to book Christmas things in August 20 years ago, Many attractions would not even have had websites or online booking systems set up 20 yrs ago! I mean PayPal only launched around 20 yrs ago...

Edited

No, they had phone lines generally rather than online booking. But plenty did have websites even back then. Just that they were more of a "catalogue" website rather than an active website with shopping carts/order systems etc.

I went to an event earlier this year, where tickets were on the app only. I've used ticket Master and 02 apps before successfully but this time the app failed and I was unable to see the tickets at all. It kept saying I didn't have any. Apparently there had been some glitch and then loads of people had to go to the box office whereupon we were instructed to install a different app that would have the tickets.
It was all very stressful and faffy and we missed half of the warm up act , which we wouldn't have done if there had been a back up option of printing tickets at home!

Bought a dress from a human on holiday recently. The thrill, the service, the buzz! Was entirely charmed by the sales person. Doesn’t even suit me (pulls across the bazooks). Was like the olden days (90s) loved the spontaneity.

Wasnt it possible to save the entry tickets on your phone beforehand so that internet or app failure at the entry gates wouldn’t have mattered? That’s what I’ve always done with airline boarding passes, attraction entry tickets, train tickets, etc.

I usually do too but we went to one event last year where they had to be stored and shown from the app with each person having their own app, not sure now whether they were stored offline or not but it did work and was seamless. It is a concern though.

Definitely agree. Military planning is needed these days, which is not my strong point.

I was massively relieved when the council removed the Covid-era requirement for booking a slot at the local tip - that was soul-destroying.

I wish they'd bring it back. Every weekend there is a massive queue to get into ours which causes problems in the surrounding streets. Apart from having to click on about 7 links, our slots were easy to book.
