Anyone want to help decorate my living room - tacky, not tasteful

My kid went off to uni, and he was the one who kept me making sensible choices 🤣

So I have decided I'm redecorating,I have adult money and a taste for the loud and tacky.

This is my wallpaper, it's going on one wall, the others are yellow, the ceiling is blue.

Can't afford a new couch but I've ordered some blue patterned throws.

I need cushions, a floor lamp, some pictures for the walls.

I want my home to be fun and loud, doesn't really need to match anything, although vaguely keeping some colours similar would be good.

I was thinking of some type of animal lamp, and a small coffee table type thing.

Also any ideas for the rest of the house, next stop is my hallway, I have dragon wallpaper for that already.

I know it's not to everyone's taste but it's just me here and I'm fed up of decorating like a grown up, I really want to have some fun.

All ideas much appreciated.

I think you can make it bright and fun without aiming for tacky to be honest.

FrenchandSaunders · 28/08/2024 12:48

I stayed in an air bnb last year that was like this, it was fabulous. I'll try and find a link.

Lookingfortackystuff · 28/08/2024 12:50

Oh the aim is bright and fun, but I've been told before on MN that certain things I like are tacky, so I'm absolutely OK with that.

Excited to see the air b&b 😍

It's the cath kidson dragon wallpaper. It's actually quite thick and looks like it will go up nicely.

I also have this mermaid wallpaper for my upstairs hallway, but I'm a little way off decorating there yet.

I'm one for colourful houses. I hate greige.

I would only put your wallpaper up on one or two walls and colour match one of the wallpaper colours to paint the other walls.

I would only put patterns next to the plain, so for example a plain colour co-ordinated throw with a patterned cushion to match your wallpaper.

Keep flooring neutral. I think a slightly darker carpet or wood flooring would suit. Ikea do some value rugs, or try Ruggable online

I love shopping for nick nacks. You can get good stuff in Sainsbury's, Primark, Next, and H&M Home. I bought a bonkers lamp in John Lewis (Anyday range) recently for £25.

If possible go to vintage shops, antique fairs, that kind of thing for old posters, pictures, or anything else you fancy.

My bedroom blind has a jungle scene on it, and my pictures of African animals were found in Waterloo book market. Sadly ny furniture is too modern, but I hope to change that one day.

Pinterest and Instagram have tons of ideas.

That place is AMAZING. That's the kind of vibe I want, really bright and colourful 😍

Oooh I like the dragon wallpaper!

Search online for maximalism. Pinterest is.fabulous for this.

Theleaveswillbefalling · 28/08/2024 13:01

I would watch Design Master, especially the maxamilist eposides. I would say aqua green velvet cushion (same colours as in the wallpaper).

What pattern are the throws?

But that’s not what you asked for, and it’s not what your wallpaper will provide either, that place is not remotely tacky. However I’m sorry to say your children’s dragons and mermaid wallpaper is when used out with a kids room.

I have neutral wooden floors through my house thankfully, so floors won't be an issue.

Three walls are yellow and the ceiling is now a dark blue, I bought a multi coloured light fitting which I'll put up after I've papered.

The yellow definitely needs pictures or something on it, I'm just not sure what yet.

I'll have a look about those shops, thank you.

Not much in the way of antique or charity shops around here unfortunately, but I will look on ebay, see what people are getting rid of.

Thank you.

Colour wash the remaining walls and ceiling in one colour, either pick out the yellow/mustard or the teal from the wallpaper. But have the 3 walls and ceiling the same colour.

Rich walnut furniture would look lovely.

Try to bring one colour through into the hall too, to give the two rooms a loose relationship between them.

Please show us the finished result too, I'd love to see it!

They have cranes on them, so different shades of blue and then 2 (I think) large cranes.

I'll give that a watch, thank you.

In this house they definitely hero two colours - green and coral - and have hues of them through the house, and even the garden. It keeps everything looking cohesive without being stringent or inflexible.

I also like how they cover 2 or 3 walls in wallpaper, so maybe that would be good instead of just the 1 wall, which can look a bit dated.

Fair enough if it's not your taste, I love it, so it's going up in my house.

The colourful vibe is what I'm looking for, but just with an added bit of loudness.

That looks amazing!! It’s exactly how I’d do my house if I didn’t rent.
I’m massively envious. Enjoy!

This is how it's looking so far, that yellow is on 3 walls, just waiting on it drying so I can do another coat then hopefully get the wallpaper up.

The yellow looks a bit brighter than that irl.

I have an oak TV unit, but I hang it off the ceiling so it's above the TV (I have a chewy dog) I could fablon it before I hang it again I suppose.

The hallway is going a light blue on the ceiling, then the dragon wallpaper, I could put bits of darker blue through there, maybe light fittings or something.

I'll put a picture up after the wallpaper goes up for sure.

Maybe a trip to The Ivy restaurant might be in order for a bit of inspo?

80smonster · 28/08/2024 13:44

Does the yellow paint match the mustard yellow in the wallpaper? Usually shades quite close to each other can be jarring together, so either you tone in or step apart by quite some distance.

Love the wallpaper. I like your design thoughts. I’d pick out some of the darker pinks for lampshades. Also look round antique, junk and charity shops for gold lamps, mirrors etc.
My sitting room has plum walls with pictures, a turquoise sofa, sheepskin throws and gold/ brass accents. It’s very cosy.

user1471548941 · 28/08/2024 13:50

I love a bright house and ended up buying a grey one so have spent the last 2 years brightening it up!!!

I've found that a good way to ensure it's nice and bright is to make sure every room has a blues/greens/cool type colour and also a red/pink/warm type colour.

So my lounge has a navy print wallpaper (all 4 walls) but a neon pink sofa and everyone comments on how fab the contrast is.

My bathroom has dark green jungle print tiles but a pink accent wall.

I'm now planning the spare room and thinking of an orange/yellow floral wallpaper with a mulberry type colour woodwork/furniture.
