Gigglewiggle87 · 27/08/2024 15:18

What age is ok for teenager to go to gp alone. Dd is 14 and I let her go on her own. I was just when others started to allow this .

Sorry title should say going *

Surely it depends on the child ? Maturity , if they want to go alone ?
I'd say 14 is fine.

She wants to go on the pill due to heavy/painful periods..

If it was something worrying /concerning. I would go . Or if she wanted me to

Why ? ... if dd had not wanted me to know. Gp would still see her without my knowledge anyway

OP posts:
AgileGreenSeal · 27/08/2024 15:30

I would most definitely go with her.

If she's happy to go on her own then let her, I used to go to the family planning clinic at that age for mine. It really helped my periods

Yeah that's fine she does go to gp alone. It was just something someone said to me about her going alone and I wondered what others thought

I'm a GP and personally prefer for young people to be at least 17 if they are on their own. We are however meant to get a feel of the person in front of us and decide if they are competent. If serious concerns about what is disclosed to us we are able to break confidentiality to discuss with a responsible adult.

boredaf · 27/08/2024 16:15

I went and got the pill on my own at 14. I think it’s fine, it’s not something I would have wanted to take my mum to either.

She's already told me sge wants to go on the pill due to heavy periods. So I know that's what she's doing.

But even if it was without telling me that's her right the gp keeps it confidential and won't tell me . But in this case I onlw why dd is going and what she's asking for .

And what if she doesn’t dare ask in front of you so ends up pregnant instead?

“Children under the age of 16 can consent to their own treatment if they're believed to have enough intelligence, competence and understanding to fully appreciate what's involved in their treatment. This is known as being Gillick competent.
Otherwise, someone with parental responsibility can consent for them.”

From NHS website.

14 is old enough to know about family history and if there was anything important to know op could have just told her prior to the appt.

No she does not have a boyfriend. She does not go out much at all.

I'm 99% sure it is due to heavy periods. She's had problems for a long time. But either way 8f it was for sexual reasons which I'm quite sure it's not she still have the right to confidentiality away from me.
