Are these soft toys safe?

Had a lovely day at the fair with DC. They each got a couple of soft toy keyrings as prizes which they absolutely adore.

Unfortunately I have contamination OCD and am now convinced they have some sort of germs/disease/bugs on them and the DC/house are contaminated. I can't sleep at all. I'm not sure how to "decontaminate" them without damaging them and feel it's probably too late anyway.

Any advice/reassurance? Do 'normal' people worry about these things? Have you ever caught something from them?

Have I made a mistake letting them have them?

They're made in China and are always a bit grubby looking but I truly feel something awful is lurking in them and can't get over it 😥

Whatever anyone says it can't cure your contamination OCD.

RogueFemale · 27/08/2024 00:28

But, no, I wouldn't personally be worried about harm to my children in this situation.

I wouldn't be worried about the toys OP. They'll be fine, they won't be containing anything sinister

Have you spoken to anyone on real life about your thoughts? You may benefit from talking through your feelings.
It must be very tiring and consuming for you

Thevelvelletes · 27/08/2024 00:46

I'd be more concerned about the safety of anything won at a fair.

Thevelvelletes · 27/08/2024 00:47

Didn't mean that in way to downplay your mh condition.

Do you mean you agree they're unsafe?

@Ocdnight

I'm sorry for what you're going through but honestly this level of anxiety isn't normal. A lot of toys and other products are made in China.

I'm sorry to sound harsh, but honestly you'd be helping your family more by fighting this rather than worrying about the toys.

I feel like you're more likely to just focus on the comments that say the toys are a risk though.

Contamination OCD needs treatment.

We (humans) can never create a 100% 'safe' sterile environment. Trying to do too much in this area wrecks life, because it can't be enjoyed.

Logically speaking, the person who works at the fair handles those toys every day and is fine. All the other families who took the toys were ok with doing so.

Olika · 27/08/2024 06:37

I couldn't bother to worry about key rings as long as your kids are old enough.

BarbaraHoward · 27/08/2024 06:38

The toys aren't a contamination risk.

If your DC are very young they may be a choking risk due to small parts.

But that's it.

They won't make anything sick or dirty.

Beautifully put , that's what I was trying to say but couldn't find the words so I didn't stress op out any further.

Overthebow · 27/08/2024 09:31

Surely your Dc are far more likely to get germs or dirt from the actual fair rises teen a little toy they've won? I wouldn't be worried about it.

Overthebow · 27/08/2024 09:31

Fair rides not teens

Do you mean safety to the thing in question, such as a living goldfish, once a traditional fairground prize? (I am joking BTW.)

This.

You won't get reassurance from here, OP. Rationally it's obvious that children aren't catching diseases from soft toys from a funfair, but OCD isn't rational and even when people tell you that, your brain currently won't let you believe it.

So do what you need to do and continue your treatment journey.

Lynsey5 · 27/08/2024 10:24

I have OCD as well and i look for reassurance from others too OP. The toys are fine. Let the kids use them. Do not break their hearts by taking them away. If you keep everything sanitised the kids immune system won't develop. I would also be worried about how much of your OCD the kids are realising. Kids with parents that have OCD tend to develop the same OCD just by learning and copying so be careful about that. I am on Sertraline now to help my OCD and it made a big difference.
