I learnt that you don’t need to peel ginger, what else am I wasting time on?!

I feel incredibly daft but I’ve been painstakingly peeling ginger whenever I fancied some in a recipe, which isn’t often because it’s a nightmare. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to learn it’s not necessary 😩

On the flip side, I also found out that people peel mushrooms. I never do this 🤔

Maybe I live a very sheltered life.

You can also eat kiwi fruits with the skin on! It tastes nice.

I refuse to peel mushrooms, life is way too short

I did know this and tried it once...just could stand the furry/hairy skin in my mouth 🤦‍♀️🤣

I find frozen onions give off too much water. But then they don't make me cry so its not an issue to just cut them. I find peeling mushrooms quite therapeutic, even though I know I don't have to. I just like the sensation as I peel them. When in a rush I don't bother.
I just smash garlic with the side of a knife, never bother using a crusher unless it's with this wee guy:

Totally not in the spirit but I adore peeling mushrooms.

Sadly I don't like them, nor do the kids. So DP has them very regularly to satisfy my urge.

I do add them to bolognese and other one pot dishes were I can really chop them down small. Love to chop them almost as much as peeling them😁

DrinkElephants · 26/08/2024 20:05

I’m with most of the other posters here you don’t need to peel veg, I don’t peel it for mash either.

Errolwasahero · 26/08/2024 20:11

In the spirit of the op’s original question, I haven’t used fabric softener on the wash for months; haven’t noticed any difference whatsoever 👍

OldTinHat · 26/08/2024 20:12

Lazy Ginger, Lazy Garlic, Lazy Chilli in jars are your friends!

I freeze it and grate with a micro plane grater straight from the freezer. I find the chunks in chopped ginger too big.

Not only no need to peel but you don't have to grate the whole lot before freezing? What else am I missing out on? Are there vacuum cleaners where you don't need to clean the filters? Self cleaning windows? Teach me more!

I've never heard of peeling mushrooms. How does that work exactly? Surely they just end up getting squashed as they're really soft?

Likewhatever · 26/08/2024 20:47

You don’t NEED to peel mushrooms (unless they’ve gone slimy) but it’s a simple pleasure.

Baked sweet potatoes are delicious and take a fraction of the time to cook.

You peel them by pulling from the “frill”. I could do it for hours.

twilightcafe · 26/08/2024 20:52

🤯 What do you mean, you don't have to peel ginger? Huh?!
Doesn't the skin taint whatever dish you've made?

Gingerisgoodforyou · 26/08/2024 20:54

Also grate ginger straight from the freezer :)

Found you can freeze peeled bananas, then put them straight into the blender to make nice cold smoothies. Frozen grapes are also nice to eat as they are.

Even better than not peeling ginger is the frozen chopped ginger you get in the supermarket.

I used to buy ginger, chop it and then freeze for future use. Now I buy it ready chopped. It's great.

This. Also garlic.

Redflagsabounded · 26/08/2024 21:20

If you want half corn on the cobs just snap whole ones in half when they are raw. They are fuckers to cut, raw or cooked.

Bananas in their skins can bbqd or put in oven, when black split them open for gooey banana yuminess. Zero effort and healthy dessert. Can add ice-cream straight into the split skin.

Redflagsabounded · 26/08/2024 21:23

Garlic 'paper' completely disappears in stews.

BigDahliaFan · 26/08/2024 21:26

I grate ginger with the skin on, and freeze it and grate from frozen. Freeze chillis. Tomatoes go in freezer too and cook from frozen if too many.

Never use fabric conditioner.

Frozen soffrito is very useful, frozen onions I find too watery.

Redflagsabounded · 26/08/2024 21:27

Those recipes where you scorch peppers to peel the skin off? Don't bother, pepper skin isn't exactly tough to eat.

Neveranynamesleft · 26/08/2024 21:27

I too have given up on fabric softeners, realised it's an unnecessary expense.

ReadingWorm · 26/08/2024 21:27

A chef once told me that you don’t need to peel ginger so I never have. But it annoys me that some recipes specifically ask you to peel it. Even some of the big chefs that should know better tell you to peel 😆

I haven't peeled a potato in years, I just do them skin on. Different when they came all covered in soil, but nowadays a quick wash is plenty I think. Only peel them for mash and I'm lazy with that and buy it ready mashed

I love mash with the skin 😋 so you don't even need to peel for that😁

halfpasteleven · 26/08/2024 22:03

No fabric conditioner here either.

I too could stand peeling mushrooms all day.

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 26/08/2024 22:17

If a recipe calls for fresh coriander you can just snip up a bunch with scissors, stalks, leaves and all. Quick, easy and delicious.

AlphabetBird · 26/08/2024 22:22

My best discovery this year has been the chopped ginger, garlic, and mixed garlic and ginger combination in the world food section at Asda. They come in cubes, so I don’t even need to think about portions. 100% love them.

OrkneyGirl · 26/08/2024 23:34

Is it true that you don't need to keep ketchup on fridge? Something to do with ingredients. Might save a second or two keeping it in cupboard rather than fridge, especially when someone's filled the ketchup bottle space with bottle of wine...

In fridge! Not on fridge! I'm not that weird!
