I learnt that you don’t need to peel ginger, what else am I wasting time on?!

I feel incredibly daft but I’ve been painstakingly peeling ginger whenever I fancied some in a recipe, which isn’t often because it’s a nightmare. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to learn it’s not necessary 😩

On the flip side, I also found out that people peel mushrooms. I never do this 🤔

Maybe I live a very sheltered life.

You don't need to peel carrots either.

Turnitoffnonagain · 25/08/2024 21:02

Or potatoes (unless the skins are v dirty, a good scrub will do)

Turnitoffnonagain · 25/08/2024 21:05

Also, re ginger, I buy a big bit and cut into chunks and freeze, so always got it in. Do the same with chillies. Never peeled a mushroom, that's bizarre.

bringincrazyback · 25/08/2024 21:05

I haven't peeled a potato in years, I just do them skin on. Different when they came all covered in soil, but nowadays a quick wash is plenty I think. Only peel them for mash and I'm lazy with that and buy it ready mashed

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/08/2024 21:06

Even better than not peeling ginger is the frozen chopped ginger you get in the supermarket.

I used to buy ginger, chop it and then freeze for future use. Now I buy it ready chopped. It's great.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 25/08/2024 21:07

No need to top & tail gooseberries or blackcurrants if you're cooking them. The papery bits just disappear, as with the ginger.

Turnitoffnonagain · 25/08/2024 21:07

I don't even peel them for mash, good fibre in there. A knob of butter on top. 😋

This. But garlic.

Bumpinthenight · 25/08/2024 21:08

We've taken to eating 'rustic mash' - unpeeled mashed potatoes!

sequin2000 · 25/08/2024 21:10

I freeze it and grate with a micro plane grater straight from the freezer. I find the chunks in chopped ginger too big.

This, also the same with garlic, chilli and onion

I keep whole chillies in the freezer. They defrost in minutes when taken out.

LittleGreenDragons · 25/08/2024 21:15

What the...??! You can buy pre-chopped frozen onions?? I never have to buy a whole one ever again? 😮

TigerDroveAgain · 25/08/2024 21:16

blimey! I've wasted too much of my life peeling ginger! I knew about potatoes, carrots, parsnips etc but somehow this has passed me by

Apparently the skin has double the beneficial nutrients as well 🙀

You don’t have to peel butternut squash also, assuming you are roasting, The skin is so thin and softens when cooked.

Namechangeforthis88 · 25/08/2024 21:38

Some shops have a minimum charge for ginger regardless of weight, I get a massive wodge, freeze it, I use a potato peeler to shave bits off straight into whatever I'm cooking.

RabbitsRock · 25/08/2024 21:41

I always peel carrots since I read about people getting food poisoning from poorly washed carrots in a restaurant

Yep, white and red!

I have ADHD so all veg goes to my fridge to die, so frozen versions are very useful!

thecatsthecats · 26/08/2024 19:36

Check out the frozen and sliced section.

Peppers
Onions
Mushrooms
Cabbage
Spinach
Casserole veg (potatoes, swede, carrots, celery)
Leeks
Mixed Mediterranean veg
Ginger
Garlic

I make an awful lot based on the above in the slow cooker.

sunnshine · 26/08/2024 19:42

You can also eat kiwi fruits with the skin on! It tastes nice.

I refuse to peel mushrooms, life is way too short

BestIsWest · 26/08/2024 19:44

I use the frozen stuff but if ever you do feel the need to peel it use a teaspoon instead of a knife.

WhitegreeNcandle · 26/08/2024 19:49

Did you know you can grate ginger straight from the freezer. Revolutionary!

Mysa74 · 26/08/2024 19:50

Frozen chopped onions are amazing , no more crying or onion scented chopping board. They're far easier and faster to cook too!

TigerDroveAgain · 26/08/2024 19:51

I'm making a curry and have used UNPEELED GINGER!!
