Sulphur cloud over UK

Sorry if this is on another thread, but I couldn’t see one.
Daily Mail reporting sulphur cloud over the UK, and people to avoid going out. Particularly people with chest complaints.

Not according to the government website: uk-air.defra.gov.uk/forecasting/

There was also one reported earlier in the year, if it was anything it would be on the BBC, there probably is a cloud but the DM is likely making much more of it than it is, like the heatwaves and deep freezes.

There’s a stiff breeze here so I can’t imagine it’s going to affect anyone here (south Gloucestershire)

If it was that bad why didn't the national alert thingy go off??? Apparently the UK would have been covered in the early hours. Not opened the curtains yet to check

Completely blue skies in Somerset ….

Daily Mail, did you say? That paragon of truth?

Magnolia1234 · 25/08/2024 08:12

Is there a Europe-wide site? The one I found stopped publishing maps in 2015.

Marseillaise · 25/08/2024 08:21

No other major news source seems to have picked this up, and even the Mail can't work out too much doom-mongering about it.

amoreoamicizia · 25/08/2024 08:24

Should we open the windows or not? I usually air the house every morning 🤔

violetsparkle · 25/08/2024 08:34

Thanks for that I read the article but there's no source for the warning? It's really weird. I've googled and can't see anything else about it.

The volcano in Iceland has erupted again - I follow a Facebook group and someone posted this map in a post about a sulphur cloud yesterday.

It came from this website - https://www.windy.com/-SO2-tcso2?tcso2,52.483,-1.802,5

I don’t know whether the settings I chose will stick, but you can pick SO2 in the settings.

I’ve not seen anything anywhere else though.

Sulphur cloud over UK

It's staring to come up in searches now.

Daily Mail for example says "from one hour ago":

Britain has this morning been engulfed with a huge cloud of sulphur dioxide spread from the volcanic eruption in Iceland, according to a weather map. A huge cloud of SO2 completely covered the country by 4am with it still covering half of the UK at 8.45am, data by Czech weather portal Windy showed.

violetsparkle · 25/08/2024 11:31

Anyone smell it yet?

Solymoly · 25/08/2024 11:43

According to that link that @alloalloallo kindly posted, it's passing away to the east now but hanging around Scotland most of the day and some of tomorrow
