Embracing Autumn

I know it's technically still summer, but it's starting to feel autumnal and I want to dig out my cosy knitwear and warm blankets, bake an apple cake, light a scented candle, put on some sturdy boots and go for a walk through fallen leaves.

If you are also feeling autumnal, join me and share your favourite autumn things - books, scents, things to do, things to make, things that make you feel happy as the days get colder and shorter.

I'm not ready yet, doesn't feel like we've had a summer!

Devonchills · 24/08/2024 08:05

I'm usually ready for autumn, but not this year, I feel cheated out of a summer!
But I will begrudgingly dig out the boots/candles/fluffy blankets and will embrace autumn eventually.
I just hope we get lots of dry days!

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 24/08/2024 08:07

We usually go blackberry picking, long walks with the dogs in the Autumn sunshine, hot chocolate after a walk… I love Autumn!

longdistanceclaraclara · 24/08/2024 08:08

I haven't embraced summer yet.

My garden, and the conker trees near me, are saying it’s autumn. There’s berries on some of my plants now, and the leaves on the conker trees are turning brown. I love it!
Ive bought a new autumn inspired blanket for the couch, and my candles are coming out on the 1st of September.

OllyBJolly · 24/08/2024 08:12

Summer has gone NC with me this year....I'm already into my Autumn wardrobe.

NoCoco · 24/08/2024 09:47

@DustyLee123 Which candles did you order, I'm on the look out and can't decide!

Andtheworldwentwhite · 24/08/2024 10:03

No no no no. U will have to drag me kicking and screaming into the cold weather.

StellaCruella · 24/08/2024 10:14

I've had such a lovely summer and going to the seaside for the next two weekends so it isn't over yet, but I totally agree that I'm starting to look forward to autumn. I associate autumn with period dramas, red wine, NT properties on weekends.
I normally feel a bit miserable in September though - I hate when I'm ready for autumn but the sun keeps sunning!

This . I'm waiting / praying for an Indian summer .

For the past two years, I've promised myself that I will splurge on a bottle of Kingdom Metamorphic perfume (which is my ultimate surround fragrance, like drinking a glass of Islay malt in the library of an old house by the sea) in September, but never actually done it. I have just been paid, so this may be the year, but I also want some cold water swimming gear, so I will have to choose.

Damsons, some fallen along with the brittle twigs that follow them. Wasps rolling with half a fruit, on the hard tinder-grass which never grows green near the trunks. Dahlias looking out on the garden, like busloads of tourists, recently arrived, slightly out of place with the locals. Bees going about their daily routine entertain them, basking in the golden sunlight that falls and casts shadows of apple trees and climbing roses against the red brick wall that pretends it is in Malta.

The six hundred tomatoes are dripping slowly off the vines ready for chutney. A glass of seyval, releases gooseberry and honeyed scents captured two years ago, from the fields below. As the sun sets and my glass empties, I consider what kales, cabbages and autumn salads to plant tomorrow.

Mine are from last year. I always go and sniff the autumn candles at Home Sense and buy a new one

Meadowfinch · 24/08/2024 11:16

I've been on gardening leave for August so I've

Restocked the log shed
Booked the chimney sweep
Sliced and frozen windfall apples
Been blackberry picking
Made jam
Browsed the autumn collections - I've spent three winters WFH in bobbly jumpers and socks. The new job is office based & I need clothes urgently.

Pruned back everything in the garden.

DS is going into sixth form so no school uniform - he needs collared shirts, chinos and a tidy jacket - more shopping

Chosen a rug for the sitting room

I love summer but I like autumn too. The only bit I really don't like is February. 🤗

zingally · 24/08/2024 11:46

I like autumn as well!

I work in education, so September has new year vibes. I'm also generally happier when I'm in a routine and busy.
It also helps that it's my birthday at the very end of September!

Sheknowsaboutme · 24/08/2024 13:12

Love this thread!

today im planting daffodil bulbs. I plant about 150 each year.

im drinking tea in my “hello autumn” mug from home bargains, and I always have an oil burner on.

Doggymummar · 24/08/2024 13:17

My new autumn cardigan arrived today, and I had autumn nails painted at the salon

fashionqueen0123 · 24/08/2024 13:23

It’s going to be 25c in a few days. This rain today is great for my garden! Our grass is so brown.

I hate the evenings getting darker.

But in terms of this topic I’m happy to embrace lots of hot chocolates!

JohnTheRevelator · 24/08/2024 18:03

I don't know what part of the country you live in,but don't be too premature! Apparently there's going to another hot spell next week.

Crunchymum · 24/08/2024 18:10

It's set to reach 28c here on Tuesday and then we have a week of 24c and sunshine so looks like we're stuck with summer for the foreseeable.

UnimaginableWindBird · 25/08/2024 12:56

I'll be glad to have warm weather back. But I'm still thinking about candles. Lots of people on Mumsnet seem to swear by St Eval, but nobody locally to me sells them so I'm considering getting some bay and rosemary tealights and hoping for the best.

Inspired by this thread, I’ve ordered a crackly wick-ed candle, but unscented, as I can’t get my head around a candle that sounds like a bonfire but smells like a spa.

DrCoconut · 25/08/2024 15:06

Keeping everything crossed that the warm weather predicted for mid week lasts to the weekend
