Pronounce Kamala

HelenWheels · 24/08/2024 04:59

apparently it is like Comma, as in a sentence and La

however we pronounce comma differently in UK
i guess it should be pronounced as they do in America rather than we would in UK?

It’s like Pamela, with a K.

I thought the kids made it sound like camel-la

Yes like Pamela but beginning with a K.

Riapia · 24/08/2024 05:17

How Smithy would pronounce it.
😉😁😁.

Weesiewoo · 24/08/2024 05:21

From what I've seen at the DNC and every other news video over the last 4 years it's Carmel with a short A on the end.
You are right, the English ( and Australian, where I'm from) pronunciation of comma are very different to the American.

Takoneko · 24/08/2024 05:29

It’s not Pamela with a K but nor is it like comma with a UK accent (as we use a very different vowel sound in that word). In my non-rhotic accent the first syllable should rhyme with farm. The “ala” is pronounced like the last two syllables in Pamela though.

orangalang · 24/08/2024 05:31

Comma-la. Would have never read Kamala like that. There's no O so how do you pronounce Kama as comma

BeatsAntique · 24/08/2024 05:36

I’m in the US (but British) and it sounds like the American version of comma. So when I say it to sound closest to how she says it I say ‘kah-ma-la’.

It’s not a short -a like in Pamela.

HelenWheels · 24/08/2024 05:42

yes to UK people it is more like Kharma La

cantpullthetrigger · 24/08/2024 05:47

Yes, I heard it as Karma-La, at least from the way the nieces explained it.

mm81736 · 24/08/2024 05:49

It means 'horrible' in Finnish

Ah well, trump means fart here in the UK.

Pipsquiggle · 24/08/2024 05:53

It's US accent Vs UK accent

'Comma' in US sounds like 'Calmer' in the UK.

I am going to say 'Calmer-la'

SpicyTomatos · 24/08/2024 05:55

She says it is Karma and Law combined.

I’d pronounce it Kam-arla.

DevilsIvyy · 24/08/2024 06:08

No only that but accents vary so much in England, even if it were just England you couldn't br sure what production was being commented on.

I was wondering which American accent was being referred to as well.

But I doubt that different accents are making the name Kamala sound so different it's impossible to recognise.

HelenWheels · 24/08/2024 06:24

differing british accents not really the question
it is difference between UK and US.
her name is only being mentioned on The News and the video is linked
