To think DP is overly paranoid in hotels/apartments

Whenever I stay in a hotel with DP he puts a chair against the main door at nighttime, the door is locked, the hotel has cctv and security, so for me this is a bit overly paranoid. We stayed in an apartment for the first time - they have security guards patrolling the area, so very safe - and I woke up the first morning to see he'd dragged an ottoman from the hallway and put it against the locked door. I've talked to him about it before and he said his dad always did it when he was a kid, so it's clearly learned paranoia. Does anyone else do this or are DP and his dad a little bit much in their security consciousness, or is this common and I'm just really lax with mine?! 😂

I suppose it depends on where you are ? I think it may consider this if I was alone .

It's just learned behaviour. It will feel a bit weird for him the first few times he overrides it but he can, if he wants to.

Clownwithafrown · 23/08/2024 11:25

So many people have encountered other guests/staff gaining access to their rooms in hotels etc, there was a thread on here about it not too long ago in fact, so no I think it's sensible, not paranoid at all.

marshmallowfinder · 23/08/2024 11:26

Quite dangerous behaviour in case of fire though. Surely a door wedge pushed from the inside would be easier and safer though if he must?

MonsteraMama · 23/08/2024 11:26

Having had a random man walk into my hotel room because of a key card mixup while I was walking butt naked out of the bathroom, I'm afraid I'm with your partner. Better safe than sorry.

Just to add - I don't use a chair though, I've got one of those hotel door jam things. Easier to remove in case of fire!

Edingril · 23/08/2024 11:33

Sounds a fire risk

TomatoSandwiches · 23/08/2024 11:43

I don't use a chair but do put something infront of the door and or a coat hanger on the handle.

Tbh I think most people are too lax and naive about the dangers of staying in hotels.

longdistanceclaraclara · 23/08/2024 11:46

I take a door wedge with me when I travel alone.

comedycentral · 23/08/2024 11:46

Get him one of those official travel lock things and let him get on with it. He will likely not sleep if you insist he doesn't do what he needs to.

What is a coat hanger on the handle going to do?

TheClawDecides · 23/08/2024 11:49

Tell him to have a look on Amazon

They do cheap portable hotel door locks and alarms.

OtterOnAPlane · 23/08/2024 11:50

I've had someone come into my hotel room in the middle of the night and nick my handbag (staff, I think).

I'm team DH.

eggandchip · 23/08/2024 11:56

Not in hotels but i once new a friend of a friend that when i went to her flat i was just so on edge i couldnt chill out my eyes where every where i was on high alert.
She was lovely very welcoming etc but i just couldnt settle near her.
Went a few time same feeling i just could not shake the edge away.
I stopped going round.
Turned out she was a massive trouble maker thank god i stopped all contact.

It jangles if someone tries the door.

mindutopia · 23/08/2024 12:04

I think it’s a bit odd, yes. What does he do at home? Surely, you are no more likely to be burgled or violently attacked in a hotel or apartment than a detached house? That said, I’m someone who hasn’t locked my house at night in probably 15 years. 😂

Blondiebeachbabe · 23/08/2024 12:12

But you lock the door, how would anyone get in?

TomatoSandwiches · 23/08/2024 12:14

It's not a proper lock though is it, just a switch and you don't know who has an access card to your door, you don't know who works there?

That's true! I didn't think of that.

I've heard stories of people getting attacked in hotel rooms, people getting keys/room numbers mixed up, and I can't stand it when cleaners come in first thing, one knock and then they come in - I've been in the shower before now, and unable to respond. Just because they work for the hotel doesn't mean they won't harm you (surely we've all seen enough on the news to know bad people could be anyone).

I do think it's very unlikely that anything bad will happen, but if you can quickly do something to make yourself safer, why not!

Definitely wouldn't insist. I've just asked him why. I was a bit WTF when I saw the massive ottoman in from of the door though 😂

Door wedge is easier as others have said.

Many hotels have chains or similar.

He has nothing on my dad though who smashed up his hard drive with a hammer and buried it in the garden. In case someone got his personal information.

As far as I'm aware he wasn't a spy.

I travel a lot for business alone and I always do this. Never bother when I'm with DH

LaDamaDeElche · 23/08/2024 12:20

He has nothing on my dad though who smashed up his hard drive with a hammer and buried it in the garden. In case someone got his personal information Oh wow!! He's definitely security conscious online too and doesn't have Amazon accounts etc as he doesn't trust it with his bank details, so never say never with the hard drive smashing 😅

Singleandproud · 23/08/2024 12:21

When traveling for work I always put the chair Infront of the door, twice I've had people come into my room. I prefer a chair to a door wedge etc as it's big and would be easier to move incase of a fire.
When travelling with DD I'm less obvious but would put a towel Infront of the door so that if someone tried to open it it would stick and again easy to remove incase of emergency.

LaDamaDeElche · 23/08/2024 12:22

I'll suggest a door wedge or the lock thing someone suggested, as it is true about a fire hazard. I'd never really thought about that before.
