Someone who loves Maths, please can you help us with this homework from our tutor.

It's the English part of it that's confusing us. We understand ratio!

Can someone please explain how to work out '60m closer' so whereabouts is P

Thank you!

You need to take 60 off the total distance then split the remainder - 140 in to two, so 70 each, then add it back on to 60.

So I think P is 130 from one end and 70 from the other

SerendipityJane · 23/08/2024 10:19

Is it just me, or should that be "ratio" ?

mumsneedwine · 23/08/2024 10:19

Ratio 13:7

It looked like a proper excerpt from an exam, that's all.

mumsneedwine · 23/08/2024 10:22

@SerendipityJane could well be. They are it immune to stupid mistakes. Most years we find a typo.

The problem is that trips Janes law of fuckups. Once you find one, there will be others. Which when it comes to exams can be problematic.

@SerendipityJane the year the exam paper mixed up Montagues and Capulets was the worst for the kids, However there have been some howlers in science over the years.

Thank you - so simple!

I think I'd actually use algebra:
DP=x
PE=x-60
DE=200

So
2x-60=200
2x=260
x=130

So

DP=130
PE=70

Ikeatears · 23/08/2024 11:38

Didn't read the question properly🙄
130:70=13:7
