Things to do with 17yo son

NCTDN · 22/08/2024 20:03

Any suggestions? It's such an in between age- too old for play activities but too young for other things. In the past we'd have done go ape type activities, science museums etc.
The two of us are both off for the next two weeks but really struggling with what to do with the weather being so changeable. We're in the north west if that helps.

Look on Wowcher for cheap experience type days that might appeal to both of you.

budget for cheapo last min break abroad? city break

Holymotherforkingshirtballs · 22/08/2024 20:12

City break? My son is 15 but loves a hotel stay, especially if there is a pool. We've stayed at the Novotel at York a couple of times as there is a pool (it was closed but might have reopened). Also likes eating out, cinema, bowling.

NCTDN · 22/08/2024 20:15

We've already been away so it's day trips rather than anything overnight. We go kayaking and walking quite a bit anyway. It's just got very samey so lining for inspiration!
Will have smooch on Wowcher.
Saw this great place that was mini golf & pool combined but they needed to be 18 for it.

Literally can't think of anything apart from drinking that he's too young for at 17?

You can do pretty much anything??

Museums, art galleries, city tours, exhibitions, concerts, plays, gigs, festivals, historic houses, castles, village fairs, steam rallies, aquarium,. zoos, clip and climb, swimming, lakes, walks, hikes mini golf, rock climbing, fishing, bike rides, beach, fairground, theme park, cinema, bowling, arcades ...

Sure, he can't do softplay or drinking....but he can do pretty much anything he could do when he was 12 ... And can do pretty much anything that an adult could do.

I can't understand why you can't think of anything or why you think he's at an "in-between" age???

Confused
Movingon2024 · 22/08/2024 20:17

17?doesn’t he do his own thing?

I treat mine as an adult and do adult type stuff - lunch out, cinema etc.

StopStartStop · 22/08/2024 20:17

17, and you expect him to hang out with you?

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 22/08/2024 20:18

Escape room.

llamajohn · 22/08/2024 20:18

Some 17 year olds are perfectly happy to spend time with their parents. My nephew was (as is at 20)

SunnySangria · 22/08/2024 20:20

Have you asked him what would he like to do @NCTDN ?

Lazysuusan · 22/08/2024 20:21

You can do almost anything. Go for a beer or cider in the pub!

Stellisee · 22/08/2024 20:22

Do you have an indoor golf/archery/axe throwing place locally?

Retro games arcade - we have 2 near us and my teen loves it (and his dad!)

We like just getting a train/bus to a different town/city we havent visited, mooch the shops, try somewhere new for lunch, maybe a gallery/museum/cathedral

Alton towers or similar, take a friend along with him?

SunnySangria · 22/08/2024 20:22

How would they know his actual age??!
I'd go with that.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 22/08/2024 20:25

Is he coming to stay with you from college or digs? Does he have friends in the area to hang out with or could he get a pt job (although two weeks probably not) as an (almost) adult I would leave to him to lead & you do your thing.

RainBow725 · 22/08/2024 20:26

Some things I have done with my older teens:

Indoor Skydiving
Climbing walls
Cinema
Badminton
Liverpool is a great day out - museum, big wheel, Albert Dock.

NCTDN · 22/08/2024 20:30

Wow there's some harsh comments here at the fact we might do things together! We just seem to have exhausted most of the suggestions already but please keep them coming.

Comedy gigs, just dont sit in front row. There's bound to be something locally. Its also the time of year for festivals be it music, food, theatre, arts, cars etc. Coasts are always good, and who doesnt like a trip to the arcades.

Floralnomad · 22/08/2024 20:37

Find somewhere that does Segway tours or if he likes animals llama walking .

Ted27 · 22/08/2024 20:39

I've done all sorts of things with my 20 year old this summer
Athletics meeting in London
city break to Copenhagen
Caravan holiday in Scarborough with friends - including 5 other young people around his age so they did stuff together
3 days in Cornwall visiting friends, was during the Euros so a bit football focused
I'm on the Isle of Wight for a week and he's joined me for 3 days. We've just pottered around, fish and chips and dinner at our favorite places, played crazy golf and air hockey, paddled in the sea, he tolerated a Roman villa for me, twilight event at the wildlife sanctuary, Dockyards in Portsmouth today before he went home.
Its just been nice to go out for leisurely breakfasts, lunches, dinner, take our take to chat instead of always being in a rush.

Streppy · 22/08/2024 20:44

How about axe throwing archery or some kind of clay pigeon shooting.

Good idea with arcade. Mine love Arcade Club. We go to the one in Leeds but there is one in Bury I think. Or Liverpool have something similar I think.

nowtygaffer · 22/08/2024 20:48

Does he like football? I took my then 17yr old DS to a Premier league match. Its not cheap but we both enjoyed it.
