Things to do with 17yo son

Any suggestions? It's such an in between age- too old for play activities but too young for other things. In the past we'd have done go ape type activities, science museums etc.
The two of us are both off for the next two weeks but really struggling with what to do with the weather being so changeable. We're in the north west if that helps.

Maybe He should be out with his mates

What? All day, every day?

He's allowed to want to spend time with his mum you know.

Manyshelves · 22/08/2024 22:45

I spend time with my son. I don’t think we’d need activities at his age

What a daft comment.

It’s a perfectly reasonable comment!

I don’t know why you are getting twatty replies OP. My DS spends loads of time with his mates and is not ND (unlike his sister who is, and would rather poke her eyes out than hang out with me right now), and he and I have a right laugh spending time with each other.

How about a theme park? I also agree with Sixes and axe throwing. Bike ride and a pub lunch?

Singleandproud · 22/08/2024 22:51

Comedy night
Poetry reading
Supper Club - our local assembly rooms has a theme every month, Puddings, Spanish, french cuisine etc
Meal out at a good restaurant
Theatre
Music gigs
A sports event
Museums you did when he was younger he'll get something different from it now.
Zoo evenings
Night walks at wildlife trusts or similar for bat watching / night photography / astronomy

You do the same activities with him as you'd do out on a date or city break with friends or any other time you are out with adults.

TwigTheWonderKid · 22/08/2024 23:51

Good grief, why in earth shouldn't they do some stuff together? My DSs are 15 and 19 and still enjoy doing stuff with me and their dad. Nowhere does the OP suggest her DS doesn't see his friends and the two things are not mutually exclusive. Also, there may be times when his friends are away on holiday and so not around.

Eating and escape rooms are my DSs' favourite things to do. Can you get to York? We had a great weekend there. The evening ghost walks are great fun.

benefitstaxcredithelp · 23/08/2024 00:06

@NCTDN what kinds of things does he like?
Is he sporty? Into music? Arts? A hobby?

That's a shame! You are missing a treat.. what about a game of rugby league?

Not if you don't like football 😂

NCTDN · 23/08/2024 08:40

Thank you for the lovely comments - he doesn't spend time with just me!
Escape rooms would be tricky with just two people wouldn't they?

No I've done escape rooms with 2 before. You could also look at the Crystal Maze experience but you will be put with others to make a group big enough. How about an indoor snow dome for some ski or snowboard lessons, you could learn together.

HopeSpringsInfernal · 23/08/2024 09:36

I'm not sure whether this has been suggested, but would he like a treasure trail?
You download a map and a set of clues, each one lasts about 2 - 2.5 hours. There's lots of different trails. They're good fun

ShaunaSadeki · 23/08/2024 09:39

That is a good idea @HopeSpringsInfernal.
DS, DD and I did a graffiti trail and that was fun.
We have also done a grizzly history guided walk

@GoodVibesHere thank you! Nothing wrong with spending some time together when friends are on holiday

I think it's quite sad these parents who don't spend time with their teens! We love going out and mine are 18 and 15. It's all about balance! They also see their friends too 🙄

Manyshelves · 22/08/2024 21:51

My 16 year old would be mortified if I tried to make him do fun activities. Just chill

Neither would I have been arranging holiday activities for DD when she was 17.

these are pretty much adults

Edited

Don't you organise things with adult friends then? Why is it odd to organise with your near adult teens?

Scentsless · 23/08/2024 09:46

Theme park, like Alton Towers or Thorpe Park, escape room, paddle boarding?

NCTDN · 23/08/2024 17:53

We've been to a place today with loads of arcade activities which was great.
We've done treasure trails before not might look at other places we've not been to.

Mystery Guides? My son and his girlfriend did the York one just after Xmas and really enjoyed it. There's Chester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Leeds within day-trip distance: www.mysteryguides.co.uk/

Holymotherforkingshirtballs · 22/08/2024 20:45

Good idea with arcade. Mine love Arcade Club. We go to the one in Leeds but there is one in Bury I think. Or Liverpool have something similar I think.

Yes there.is my 17 year old went a few months back with his friends the6 sell burger and chop, pizza type food too.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/08/2024 19:55

No idea why you've had so many shitty replies, OP - ignore them.

At that age I loved doing a day trip to the beach with my mum - we'd have a wander round the shops, fish and chips for lunch and an ice-cream on the beach, then play in the arcades etc. before heading home.

Ivesaidenough · 24/08/2024 11:26

I agree, ignore all the weird replies from the cool mums. Why do people bother posting if all they have to say is "my DC are too cool for this, you're so odd."
Don't reply then!

We're in London so Puttshack is a bit of a favourite, also Toca Social (football games) We've hired outdoor tennis courts which are fairly cheap (we only play for fun) and went to the free outdoor cinemas.
If the weather is nice we do a bit of frisbee and lunch/picnic in the parks. Just getting to the age of wanting to look good, so will tolerate a quick look round the shops e.g. Nike/Adidas etc. or Westfield.
We've also done seaside day trips, e.g. Brighton, hired bikes and rode along the front to Rottingdean.
