Tips for buying car from dealership

Please can I have some tips for buying a used car from a dealership? I've never bought one before and have no clue what I'm doing!

Anything to look out for/avoid? Can you negotiate on the asking price? If so how best to go about it.

Thanks in advance

I'm interested in this too. Last time I did it we got the AA to go and check the car over. Was expensive but worth it imo as saved me from a terrible car that looked ok on the surface. But maybe unnecessary if you know about cars.
I got the dealer to do a few things (eg re gas air con) but didn't negotiate on price so interested in other replies.

Nothing to get stressed about. If you've done a bit of research (comparing prices of same make & models with other dealers) then you should have an idea of its value. If it's a main dealer then I doubt they will be selling anything dodgy and usually the car has been services, MOT'd etc.

I have always bought my car from a main dealer, usually between 2-4 years old and usually p/ex with a car I've had for 3 or 4 years.

Never had any issues & have always tried to get some money off, but usually this has come from them giving me more off mine that I'm part exchanging.......and only £250-£500.

For reference cars I'm selling are around £10k and buying ones worth around £20k. New one on finance/OCP.

HTH.

Thanks for the replies. I know nothing about cars! It would be a main dealership so hopefully that reduces the risk.

I definitely need to research how much mine is worth as I will probably look to part exchange rather than sell privately.

I have found the auto trader app very good for searching and comparing cars.
