Padstow, although in high season it’s heaving.

St Ives is also nice… Newquay… not so much IMO

Deipara · 22/08/2024 06:38

Padstow

user1494050295 · 22/08/2024 06:39

Fistral beach nice we stayed there and could walk in to Newquay. More to do than padstow too

Gymmum82 · 22/08/2024 06:39

Padstow town is nicer. Though heaving and unenjoyable in summer holidays. The beaches surrounding Newquay are nicer though. But the town isn’t nice

FeralNun · 22/08/2024 06:42

What are you looking for on holiday? Surfing/beach/kids? Newquay. Eating/pottering/people watching? Padstow.

Both are rammarella in the school hols though!

NameChangedToDisguiseEmbarrassment · 22/08/2024 06:42

Depends on what sort of holiday you want.

If you’re 25 and want to party - Newquay

If you’ve got small kids and want beaches, amusements, aquarium, zoo and other things to do - Newquay

Padstow is a nicer place but tiny and all shops and cafes, so you’d need a car and expect to travel out on day trips to do things.

Thank you, we went to padstow earlier in the week and it wasn’t too bad, husband wondered about mixing it up with Newquay when we have a friend down to see us on holiday but I’m thinking we may find Newquay slightly disappointing compared to padstow!

We went to st Agnes last year which was v pretty

They aren't really comparable, as very different places.

I can never understand why people rave about Padstow, it's just pretty average, with not a lot to do.

Ridiculousradish · 22/08/2024 08:08

Ha e you considered Falmouth? Penzance?

Wouldn't bother with Falmouth today. It's hammering down with rain and bloody windy.

mindutopia · 22/08/2024 08:42

What is it you’re looking to do? If it’s beach/town then I’d go to St Ives. Or even Port Issac and possibly pair with a swim at Port Quin (also great for kayaking or SUP if the tide/weather is right). I also like Falmouth if you want more town like stuff. Obviously all are nicer when the weather is not like it is today.

HelpMeGetThrough · 22/08/2024 09:10

Some posho in his super yacht is moored in the bay in Falmouth sheltering.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 22/08/2024 09:14

Padstow is much nicer than Newquay which I think is a dump, or it was last time I went.

I like Looe, Polperro and Mousehole

Ohdearyme72 · 22/08/2024 09:23

Newquay is not all that nice. Padstow is Chelsea-on-Sea. Falmouth is lovely, so is St Ives (parking is a nightmare). Marazion is nice too. Penzance isn't. St Agnes , Mousehole are lovely, so is Perranporth. Godrevy and Gwithian beaches are the best. Hayle is nice too. (My DH is from Cornwall btw ;-)).

mewkins · 22/08/2024 09:37

If it's just a day trip/lunch then Watergate Bay outside Newquay is nice and had a nice cafe/restaurant when I was last there a few years ago. Tbh I'd much rather be sitting there watching the waves than elbowing my way through the crowds at Padstow. You could do a nice coastal walk too. (I am currently in the SE in 40mph winds though so have no idea of the weather in Cornwall at the moment).

Thank you, very helpful. 40mph winds here too so pretty similar by the sounds of it!

Might make for some spectacular waves though 😁

Its trying to brighten up here now. Still pretty windy

Angrymum22 · 22/08/2024 11:29

Why not try the south coast, the temperature is always a few degrees higher and a lots of little harbour towns. Beautiful coves and places to visit. Looe is probably the most commercialised but it is so much nicer than Newquay.
The last time we stayed down there we found a lovely holiday let inland. It was close to the A30 which made it far easier to travel.
My DSis lives in Cornwall and rarely visits the north coast hotspots.
Having spent many years visiting the south coast we decided to go to Rock recently, supposedly the “in” place. I was very underwhelmed.
Perhaps because we have the benefit of local knowledge (BIL is Cornish) we get to see the less touristy spots.

I agree- I love the south coast. Mevagissey, Fowey, Lizard Point are all amazing - the Jurassic Coast is pretty spectacular.

Timeforanotheraliasnow · 22/08/2024 12:02

Padstow is great to sit on the harbour, eat a pasty & watch the kids catching crabs. Crowds are hideous though.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 22/08/2024 12:04

Neither. Try St. Mawes, Fowey etc.

It's cleared up now!

It has, not looking bad out there now. Still a bit breezy
