Is this weird? GCSE present

Hi, we are a Pakistani family living in a little English village. One of our neighbours down the lane has a son who will be getting his results tmrw. In our culture, we give money for gifts. I'd it weird if I put a £20 note in his card or should I just give a card and box of chocolates. We don't know them very well but he is a lovely, polite boy and I want to congratulate him whatever his grades.

No, not weird at all. I'm going to do the same for my GS. I'm sure he will be delighted.

That's so kind. Not weird at all.

That sounds really generous. I'd say from my perspective it's not the norm for anyone other than close family/parents to give a gift to reward a kid for exam results. Did he definitely get decent marks? If not it could be seen as a bit of a sore point.
Maybe just a tenner, in case they might struggle to reciprocate. Which they probably would feel the obligation to. Or even just the card alone would be enough.

That is very kind of you. Just check he has passed his GCSEs before you congratulate him. Teens love cash gifts.

Good or disappointing results, it's lovely that you want to celebrate this big moment with them. Go for it.

BareWithMe500 · 21/08/2024 19:31

Oh thank you very much everyone. I didnt want to pry and ask the results so I thought I'd just give the gift...fingers crossed he has done well.

I think it would be slightly odd unless you were close friends ... and certainly if he's not done well it may be a bit oddly received so I'd check results first
