Help with stopping vaping anyone??

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 20/08/2024 15:17

I smoked for ten years, not many a day maybe 5. I managed to wean myself off them to a vape (refillable not disposable) and have been vaping ever since but I feel like now is the time to try and stop.

Apart from the obvious health benefits and feeling like a twat vaping in public, I hate the dependency on it. We are going on a long haul holiday next year and my dad doesn’t know I vape 😂 so I would like to kick it before then.

I’ve started by setting certain times a day when I can vape, I’m going much longer in between now and I’m planning on reducing the nicotine gradually when filling up but is there anything else that would help? Patches? Gum? I wonder if that would just be transferring the addiction onto something else and I would really like the freedom. Any tips gladly received!

Hahaha I know exactly what you mean regarding bowels!

Things you learn too late, part 23987 - nicotine apparently weakens your abdominal wall. I have a hernia which has developed over the past few months - have quit nicotine now obviously, but it might have been a factor. Another good reason to give up and why it's not a good idea to vape or smoke as you get older. Probably already weakened from pregnancy but the vaping hasn't helped, if this information is correct.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 04/04/2025 22:33

Oh no sorry to hear that! Definitely another reason to add to my arsenal! Hope you’re feeling better now

Day 10 almost at a close! Sometimes I’m great, other times I struggle. Keep on keeping on.

Hi OP. Thanks for starting this. It's been helpful to read through today (day 3 of no vaping). It's very hard, nearly caved a couple of times.

How are you getting on now?

I vaped so much I'm not sure what I'll do with myself in the evenings when I don't need to take a break from watching TV or reading to go outside and vape 🤣😞. I hate it though, need to stay strong!

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 16/04/2025 07:49

So glad it’s been helpful, I wasn’t sure if I should keep posting daily updates. I was worried it may sound a little smug 😂

Still off the vapes! That’s three weeks and one day. It is getting easier so don’t give up! How are you quitting? Cold turkey or using replacements? I know how hard it is so you should be really proud of yourself!

Fabulous, that's really good going! What do you do when you're feeling it most?

I bought nicotine gum yesterday but not sure how I feel about it (only had 2 pieces over course of the day). For the most part ie until then and today I've been cold turkey. I'm in the office today and ordinarily I'd be going outside for little breaks every couple of hours so I'm struggling a little!

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 17/04/2025 16:21

I smoked menthol liquid so when I was really bad I popped a mint! I tried so hard to go over all the reasons in my head as to why I wanted to quit in the first place and if all else failed I tried distracting myself by going for a walk or doing some yoga (trying to be more healthy in all things!)

3 weeks 3 days! It’s getting easier during the day but when I have a glass of wine it’s tough or when I am particularly stressed. My mum has had some bad news and I find myself not knowing what to do and (figuratively) reaching for my vape. Ho hum

Well done OP. You should add up what you've saved and buy yourself a small gift or treat thing at the end of the four weeks. I've been saving £90 a month which isn't bad.

gerimander · 18/04/2025 22:13

Since I last posted I haven’t quit but I have bought a rechargeable and lowered the juice down to 10mg instead of my usual 20mg disposable. I don’t find it half as enjoyable as the disposable I have to admit. I’m still finishing a disposable but once that’s done I feel like I might naturally be less inclined to vape because it’s just not as pleasant on the rechargeable. Why is that?

Anyway I point blank refuse to buy the disposables again and they’re getting banned soon anyway so hopefully this is a step in the right direction.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 18/04/2025 23:04

£90 a month is amazing!! I’m rather good at treating myself anyway 😂

I only used a rechargeable but honestly this is good! The less you enjoy it the less likely you are to keep it going. You’ve got this!

Just updating for anyone that’s interested or anyone that googles and comes across this in the future.

If I can do this anyone can. That’s 40 days vape free and I am beginning to forget about it for large chunks of the day. Amazing.

Im so glad my holiday will be free of factoring in vaping and I won’t be dependent on it at all.

Well done The God! There are so few physical positives to giving up vapes (as opposed to smoking, which stinks and is horrible) that it is really hard to stay stopped. I have stressful days when I struggle but stopped (for good) just over four months now. 😁

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 05/05/2025 21:55

Thank you and a huge well done to you!

You are so right , doesn’t smell, doesn’t cost that much (not disposable), no concrete evidence of health issues. All things you can constantly rationalise in your mind. I felt stupid doing it though and that’s essentially what’s keeping me off it

Have you tried those breathing whistles with flavoured filters in them? I'm thinking of trying to give up, not through choice but because of how much the government is putting up vape juice next year, I have 2 choices, give up or buy as much juice stock as I can before October 2026.

Nat6999 · 06/05/2025 01:25

Sorry, hadn't read the full thread, I'm terrified by how much the government are putting up vape Juice from October 2026, a 100ml short fill bottle will go up by £22, that means for me a bottle of one of my juices will cost £33 & the other £42, 10ml nic shots will go up £2.20, I have 4 per 100ml so that is another £8.80 per bottle. I just can't justify spending that kind of money.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 06/05/2025 07:51

Bloody hell! I had no idea they were putting it up at all never mind that much! Gently, you’ve got loads of time before then and could totally get rid of the whole thing easily by then.

Well done OP! This is amazing just cold turkey too, what have you replaced it with exercise did you say?

Serendipity this thread appeared for me as myself and DH have been discussing giving up over the wknd. In fact he hasn’t touched it since yesterday afternoon!

I gave it up for a year when pregnant a few years back and started again 🫠 for me I’m just embarrassed about vaping, I actually feel like a leper with family, colleagues and friends - just feel pathetic!

It will be so tough I fear as it is constantly attached to me > unsure what my quit plan is yet, perhaps the book then gum or patches if I need it - I’m a planner so need to have something to follow, happy to take suggestions

AInightingale · 06/05/2025 11:32

@FumbDucker I tried to give up twice using patches/gum but fell by the wayside after a couple of months - maybe because the nicotine addiction was still active in me.

The third attempt was cold turkey, lots of mints and ordinary gum, three days like a bag of rats - the TEMPER - and then the physical addiction is broken and it's just the habit you need to work on. But I think Allen Carr was right - nicotine isn't that bad an addiction, comparisons to opiates are v exaggerated.

I didn't buy his book in the end - I just read a few extracts on Amazon!

If you can pick a few days that are less stressful than others, like a holiday period or a bank holiday weekend, you might have more chance of success. Good luck.

I have replaced it with yoga and walking but when the cravings got really bad I had mints. Honestly the cravings tapered off pretty quickly.

I too felt as though I had it constantly attached to me and was so embarrassed by it. My husband still vapes but it doesn’t bother me too much to see it, would be fab if you and your husband could support each other though!

Cold turkey was the way for me but I kept telling myself if I needed to I could use the book, gum whatever but I just kept going hour by hour and then I saw I didn’t need them at all.

Good luck! If you need encouragement I’m here, I know how hard it is!
