Help with stopping vaping anyone??

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 20/08/2024 15:17

I smoked for ten years, not many a day maybe 5. I managed to wean myself off them to a vape (refillable not disposable) and have been vaping ever since but I feel like now is the time to try and stop.

Apart from the obvious health benefits and feeling like a twat vaping in public, I hate the dependency on it. We are going on a long haul holiday next year and my dad doesn’t know I vape 😂 so I would like to kick it before then.

I’ve started by setting certain times a day when I can vape, I’m going much longer in between now and I’m planning on reducing the nicotine gradually when filling up but is there anything else that would help? Patches? Gum? I wonder if that would just be transferring the addiction onto something else and I would really like the freedom. Any tips gladly received!

2nd vote for Allan Carr. I didn't quit immediately but it changed my mindset and eventually I did. Just keep going. If you haven't quit by the holiday then take some patches.

That's so interesting about the treat mindset. I'm going to mention this to DM as she can't quit only cut down.

I think that quitting by reducing the time you vape is destined to failure as you’re treating vaping as a special pleasure to be rationed. You need to start to despise vaping and this is where the Allen Carr book works. It’s true that it’s an attempt at hypnosis and that it’s repetitive but I think it does work. I quit vaping in January (so I’m not out of the woods yet) by reading his How To Quit Smoking book and replacing the word ‘cigarette’ with ‘vape’ in my head as I was reading. Cheaper than buying the cut and paste version and feeling annoyed! Good luck everyone, we can do this.

Could be my issue. I can go long stretches of time without it which makes me think I’m not really doing it much but then when I get home I end up really overdoing it.
Totally is a mindset thing. My treat time is sat with a vape and a glass of wine on a Friday night when the kids are in bed. Only it isn’t a treat really when it’s probably knackering my health :-(

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 29/03/2025 11:48

The treat mindset is fair. That’s why when I had the bug I thought it might give me a jumpstart on cold turkey. It’s really difficult to know how much nicotine you are consuming on vapes too so no way of knowing just HOW addicted you may be.

on day four today, feeling ok, trying my best to distract. I had a glass of wine last night with no vape. It was weird and I hated it 😂 BUT I am loving not being dependent on a stupid vape. Not having to factor in when I’m going to have one or constantly wondering where it is. I need to keep strong.

I really feel for everyone on this thread, it really is an incredibly difficult addiction to overcome and to the pp who thinks they are uber addicted, honestly I was heading that way. I’m here for anyone who needs support

Can I ask why the disposables are so much worse?

Can I ask why the disposables are so much worse?

I’d like to know this too as they are the ones I use. I thought it was mainly due to them being cheap and easily accessible to young people.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 29/03/2025 12:57

Yes I’d be curious too, is it the higher nicotine content? Or the ease of access? I have a shortfall I fill and I spent so long telling myself ‘at least I don’t smoke disposables, they are terrible’ but I don’t know why 😂

Disposables = litter. Non-recyclable. New litter appeared when disposables came in. Large amount of litter I see everywhere comprised of disposable vapes and their packaging.

I've got the book. I was bitterly disappointed - the reason is, I had the Allen Carr one on giving up drinking and the vape one was exactly the same with just the word Vape in place of the word alcohol. It literally was a cut and paste job - I could have saved myself a few quid. Once I knew it was completely impersonal - I stopped reading it.

People rave about the Allen Carr books, but personally I didn't find them that great. It's just hypnosis via reading (or an attempt at )

This is the thing though. Allen Carr died in 2006 and the vaping book was published in 2021 so I did wonder if it was just a rework to channel it towards vaping.

Having said that the Allen Carr quit smoking book worked for me. It will be 7 years in May since I quit.

AInightingale · 29/03/2025 15:46

So many rechargeables are a disposable in all but name - yes more expensive, but take them from the package and they'll have a full charge and a free cartridge.

Vape sales really ought to be restricted to pharmacies but it's too late now, too many people addicted and they need to be as accessible as cigarettes. Can't really believe how the govt dropped the ball on the sale of vaping products and how casual regulation was, of what is a perniciously addictive drug.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 30/03/2025 12:15

Day five 😐 I’ve not given in but there are certain times of day I would kill for a vape. We had a takeaway last night and after a large meal I would normally have a good puff. I managed not to but I actually don’t think I managed to eat as much (which may not be a bad thing)

I still love the fact I am not dependent on it. I like not having to think about where it is and not having to factor in a smoke.

It will be worth it, it will be worth it! Hope all are getting on ok

God yes, after a meal is a really difficult time.
So few people smoke in their houses, round kids etc nowadays that an after-dinner cigarette isn't as tempting, but vaping can be done anywhere, and that's why it's so bloody difficult to give up!

Yes this is the thing isn't it. There's no 'give away' signs. I wonder how many people vape in toilets in restaurants/work/hotels/airports - there's got to be a fair few (that includes me 🥴)

Anyway I've kind of gone off on a tangent!

Well done OP - you've broken the back of it. There shouldn't be any going back now !

You've done really well, so be proud!

For me to give up, I think I'd have to have nicotine patches at the very least.

gerimander · 30/03/2025 22:28

Well done op you’re doing amazingly well. My latest disposable is almost dead and my plan was to go look for a rechargeable with a lower nicotine mg. Dh then came home with a replacement disposable the same as my current one, gah!
I am trying to at least be more mindful about when and how often I use it. When you use it too much it does nothing for me other than give me a dry mouth so it’s pretty pointless and definitely just habitual behaviour. So I’m stopping myself and thinking do I really need that right now. Baby steps.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 31/03/2025 20:38

Day six, I feel like I’ve been better today. The cravings were definitely not as bad and I’ve gone for stretches without thinking about it at all.

Im currently tracking what I eat for holiday weight loss so it’s helping me not exchange my vaping for snacking. Must stand strong. I will be the person on holiday who looks good in her shorts and isn’t puffing away on a stupid bit of metal!

Awesome update! Well done you!!

You're giving me inspiration for when I (eventually) try to give up. You've definitely broke the back of it now that's for sure!! 😁

There is no point in stopping before you are ready. When it’s time you will know. Hopefully this thread can help someone even if it’s just reading back over someone else’s experiences.

It definitely will.

You should be very proud . No raspy dry cough for you tomorrow morning ! (Jealous )

I think I'll need to get a hobby, get back into the gym so I've got a distraction. I've done it before, got into fitness. I think I've I don't change an aspect of my life, I'll fall at the first hurdle. Exercise, being out of breath, and puffing on a vape afterwards don't really go together.

I was thinking today, it's so silly really. Puffing on that thing (out of desperation in a toilet cubicle that stinks of farts!) is like a baby with a bloody dummy!

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 01/04/2025 19:55

A hobby sounds like a great idea! A great way to challenge frustrations and cravings into something productive. I like walking and yoga when the urge is taking me.

I know what you mean, I’ve spent more time than I’d like to admit hiding in toilets or dingy alleyways vaping and it’s gross.

today is a week! Had some cravings this morning while I was pottering around getting ready but happily they calmed down once I was out and about and busy. Fingers crossed!

Hope you're proud of yourself.

Especially with no nicotine patches or outside help. You're an inspiration! I'm jealous, I admit 😁

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 01/04/2025 21:17

Aww that’s kind thank you. To be honest I think reducing the nicotine over the last six months really helped. I went from a full bottle to one fifth, after that I’m sure I wasn’t consuming much nicotine so maybe isn’t as impressive as it sounds 😂

Im really just using this thread as inspo, both for myself and others should they need it now or in the future

I quit vaping two weeks ago. I went cold turkey. The first week was horrific, the cravings were so strong it nearly flattened me.
Prior to this I was on the 15k puff disposables and they were only lasting me 2 weeks. The trouble is like vaping. I enjoy it. I looked forwards to it. I miss it now I've quit

But I had to do it and it is getting much easier, I can go hours and hours without even thinking about it anymore.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 02/04/2025 07:04

Well done! I’m hoping this week will be a lot easier then. Fingers crossed!

Never, ever give up on yourself ❤️

AInightingale · 02/04/2025 08:44

Are you less tired now you've quit @Username2101 .It is hard to find positives for staying stopped - not like smoking which stinks and costs a fortune - but that's one I am clinging too! Plus colds while vaping are just as bad as smokers' colds., ime.

gerimander · 02/04/2025 16:56

As ridiculous as it sounds, another reason I’ve struggled to quit is because it helps regulate my bowels - TMI warning ahead.

I do find that a vape early in the morning especially when accompanied by a coffee, is basically guaranteed to make me go to the loo. I work in a job where I can’t always easily access a toilet and so it gives me peace of mind being able to go on schedule like this before I go to work. I’ve had very sporadic bowels over the years and as stupid as it sounds this has been the most controlled they’ve ever been!
