Help with stopping vaping anyone??

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 20/08/2024 15:17

I smoked for ten years, not many a day maybe 5. I managed to wean myself off them to a vape (refillable not disposable) and have been vaping ever since but I feel like now is the time to try and stop.

Apart from the obvious health benefits and feeling like a twat vaping in public, I hate the dependency on it. We are going on a long haul holiday next year and my dad doesn’t know I vape 😂 so I would like to kick it before then.

I’ve started by setting certain times a day when I can vape, I’m going much longer in between now and I’m planning on reducing the nicotine gradually when filling up but is there anything else that would help? Patches? Gum? I wonder if that would just be transferring the addiction onto something else and I would really like the freedom. Any tips gladly received!

Read Allen Carrs easy way to stop vaping.

You'll be off the vape before you know it. Hand on heart.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 20/08/2024 15:21

Ooh I never thought of this! I’ll definitely order and give it a try. I’m so over it

I used timers. Can't vape for 3 hours. Try and hold myself to it. Kept extending the time period til it was twice a day. Habit breaking like don't vape after meals or in the car eg.
Then steel yourself and chuck it out. Be strong!

AInightingale · 20/08/2024 15:59

If you use a patches therapy, it kind of tapers so you start by using the high strength patch for seven days (costs £12 a pack from Tesco I think), then dropping to lower strength and so on. Theoretically, you should be nicotine free in a month. They do give you bizarre dreams though.

The Niconell patch is much better than the Niquitan for adhesion. They fall straight back off. (Sorry if I haven't spelt those right, but they are the main brands).

You could try the tablets and gums but they are a bit rough on the mouth and the stomach and don't taste great. I've heard they can cause hiccups too.

You need to get the vape device and the cartridges in the bin (or to the recycling) and out of your way when you pick a start date, because a stressful day will totally undermine you.

If you really want to give up, you will, same as smoking, but if you still enjoy it, it will be much more difficult!

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 20/08/2024 16:22

I do indeed still enjoy it but I’m also so over it! I hate it when we are out for the day with my teen and I have to stop for a smoke and interrupt the fun. I hate the dependency. Any more tips are soooo appreciated

Doesn't your teenager hate you vaping? Mine did - he even flushed a disposable vape down the toilet. I'm sure that did the ecosystem a world of good.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 20/08/2024 18:04

😂 it doesn’t seem to bother her but she would be happy if I quit. A lot of her peers vape and I really want to avoid her doing it too. Best way I guess is to practice what I preach

You're not the only one that wants to stop OP 🙋‍♀️

Meezer2 · 20/08/2024 18:41

Following with interest. I need to stop vaping

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 20/08/2024 19:17

Ooh yay! Maybe we could encourage each other along. What are your first steps?

Yes please godofsmallpots, I've got no idea where to start. I stopped smoking on New Year's Eve but have replaced it with more vaping. 😩

This is also my mistake, I’m sure I’m vaping way more than the equivalent of cigarettes I was smoking 💀

At the moment I’m only vaping every three hours, will see how that goes and try to increase from there. It’s SO hard though, I can’t believe how addicted to nicotine I am

If you pay for Spotify the Allan Carr audiobooks are included.
I hate how vaping is so addictive. I think at least with smoking the smell, cough etc was a deterrent and it was harder to hide. I love the taste of vapes although I have a horrible one at the moment.
I defo want to stop as I stopped smoking for 15 years went out, got drunk and started vaping. 😫

Pennyplant19 · 20/08/2024 20:39

Ooooh, I need to stop too. I stupidly started vaping last year having given up smoking 20 years ago!
We are going to Singapore in November, and it's totally illegal there - you can't even take them into the country.
I gave up smoking with Allen Carr, so will get the vaping book ☺️

user1471556642 · 20/08/2024 20:56

I decided I wanted to quit so I reduced the strength of my vape every so often until I was on zero nicotine. Then realised I didn’t need it anymore, it was weirdly ok

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 20/08/2024 21:03

Really appreciate the posts! I didn’t know that about Singapore. It might as well be illegal where I’m going next year and I’d rather anything than listen to my dad ranting on about me vaping 😂

You can't bring a vape into Australia anymore if it contains nicotine. Huge fines. You can bring the empty device but need a prescription to fill it once you are there. Then from October, you can buy a vape while there, but it must be from a pharmacy. It makes our laws in the UK seem rather puny doesn't it!? You can even pick them up at the counter in Poundland!

alwaysachore · 22/08/2024 23:08

I stopped vaping around 7 months ago (have had a few relapses recently if I have had a glass of alcohol!). I never thought I would do it as was vaping all the time but I cut down the nicotine gradually from 6% to 0% and then, without that driving the addiction, I forgot to vape and chucked it away after a few weeks.

Halloumiheaven · 22/08/2024 23:16

Well done on embracing the idea of stopping OP. I also used vapes (very successfully) to quit smoking. Unfortunately, it's turned out to be the most addictive habit I've ever formed ! My refillable broke whilst out and I ended up buying a disposable. Got hooked on the things and still buying them now. They're highly addictive and extremely convenient, perfectly pocket sized. They're also ruddy expensive. I struggle to go an hour or two without it. What I have started doing is: when we go out as a family, not taking it with me so that I can't access it until we're back (sometimes that can be hours) and it's surprising how you can start to almost forget about it. Perhaps make areas like your car a vape free zone? I do think a lot of it is habit behaviour. If you can try to break some of the associations it might help you cut down as a start. (Coming from a raging hypocrite angle here 😆)

hairbearbaby · 22/08/2024 23:22

The easiest thing for me was to literally just throw them all in the bin and not buy any others. It was hard for a couple of days but I kept busy and by within a few days the urges had tapered down a lot and it was easier to manage.

MikiSu · 22/08/2024 23:30

I did it by reducing the nicotine strength- started at 18mg and weaned myself down to 0mg - when I got down to 0mg on the vape I was also using nicotine gum to stop the nicotine craving. I actually found it was the 0mg vape more than the gum I was craving - realised that a huge part of my problem was just needing something to do with my hands (my vape had been practically glued to me before that point!) - good luck!

AInightingale · 22/08/2024 23:38

They can't really remove them from shops and make them pharmacy-only as people who are desperate and miles from a pharmacy (or who run out of vapes at night) will consider buying a pack of cigarettes instead. It's a difficult one, but they are too bloody easy to buy for people struggling to give up.

NotHooray · 22/08/2024 23:42

I gave up vaping and stupidly went onto nordic spirit nicotine pouches, so now I'm trying to kick that bloody habit too! Was just kicking the can down the road a bit in hindsight. Would recommend just tapering and coming off the vape instead of replacing it with something else. Good luck x

lillyofthevalley1 · 22/08/2024 23:44

Ditto OP. I've vaped for around 8 years now. Quit smoking and went onto vaping. It's obviously improved massively since I started it originally. I'm glued to it but WANT to stop. I just don't know how. I WFH so it's even harder as I'm in my own space.

jd88123 · 23/08/2024 02:19

I recently gave up vaping, never had it out my hand before. I've been off them for 4 weeks now. I used nicotine patches and am still on the nicotine gum to help cravings. I still crave the vape, especially when having a wine but I am so glad I've stopped. It's a horrible addiction and like you I hated the dependency. I've been eating so much junk though, so now on a diet 😭. You can get the patches and gum off amazon.
Good luck!
