What do you add? Little things to make autumn and winter more tolerable or enjoyable (especially if you are a SAD sufferer like me!)

So far I have -
Vitamin D supplements
Nice herbal teas (spiced apple)
Echinachia drops
Nice hand cream

I already have a Lumea alarm clock and heated blanket!

This is such a lovely thread. I so love autumn and the excitement that builds for the festive season. Candles. Throws.

TheMithrasDirective · 21/08/2024 17:25

All of the above! All my faves mentioned already. I'm so looking forward to getting the winter clothes out again.

Normally, the cherry on the autumn cake would be a new Strike/Robin book from JKR, but it's not out yet 😭

ProjectsGalore · 21/08/2024 17:35

Some great books, a sewing project and jam jars to create some pickles with.

Theremedy · 20/08/2024 14:46

Oh yes socks!

Buy cashmere ones if you can. Wool overs cashmere and merino are a good budget option.

I wish I was crafty because crochet and knitting seem like the perfect cosy crafts. I always end up frustrated with a tangled amount of wool!

must add lip balm, preferably a red stained one if I can find one!

What about needle felting or simple cross stitch?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2024 17:50

The Clinique Black Honey almost lipstick is lovely and lasts forever, so works out at good value cost per wear, if that helps you to justify it!

Stem ginger
Maple syrup
Lovely marmalade
Plums
Rice pudding
Custard

A cosy robe and socks.

Ginger tea.

Bubble bath - probably Badedas.

I am reading through this thread and absolutely swooning 🥰
For me, a new gardening notebook to cosy up with and scribble all my plans for next year 🌱

Castlerigg · 21/08/2024 23:49

I love autumn. Jumpers, boots, massive bowls of stew, soup, making chutneys and jams, big scarves, candles ❤️

All of my possible suggestions have already been made by others though. Your hamper is going to be amazing. Hope it's for me!

OriginalUsername2 · 22/08/2024 00:22

Lovely thread!

I want to collect conkers, buy a woodwick candle and learn to crochet!

Im also going to go for some long coastal and woodland walks with lots of things I want to listen to on my phone, water, snacks and a notebook & pen in my bag. I love to do this in the Autumn when the weather has cooled and the crowds are gone. I’ll try and do it weekly I think.

Something to get rid of the spiders that start appearing in my house in September maybe!

Sorry wrong quote

My first thought is a plane ticket to somewhere sunny - but that's maybe not in the spirit of the thread !

It was my first thought too 🤣

HearTheMessenger · 22/08/2024 00:45

A burning log

outdamnedspots · 22/08/2024 00:50

Hiking boots so I can enjoy being outside

Bubble bath

Hand cream

A light lamp for preventing SAD

gardenmusic · 22/08/2024 07:39

I had better de-thorn them first, but rosehip sprays from the garden.
Supposed to pick and preserve with a bit of glycerine and water in October, but never tried before and I'm going to try now, as something will have eaten them by October.
We may have to throw a soggy mess from the communal basket. Sorry for the inconvenience!

gardenmusic · 22/08/2024 09:34

This lovely thread has reminded me!
A walk in Tenterden to collect the fallen red-ish 'maple' leaves. I have been doing it for years.
I dry them, and spray silver the next year for Christmas decor.
I am behind with my pressing. I need to replenish.

I did an autumn shop last week, £140 but I got absolutely everything for the autumn and even winter months for my whole family.

  • Instant hand warmers, I always keep a couple in my bag for those cold 5am walks to work
  • Hand cream
  • Lip balm
  • New pyjamas for everyone
  • Slippers for both kids
  • Fluffy socks
  • Blankets for the beds
  • Blanket for the sofa, it's leather so gets very cold
  • High strength vitamin D tablets
  • Vitamin D liquid for the kids
  • New hats and gloves for the kids because they've outgrown them from last year
  • Thermos for work so I can take soups/stews
  • Window film, we used it last year as our property has no insulation and it gets really cold, it was amazing, gas bill went down massively and we stopped getting condensation on the windows
  • Glow sticks, my kids use them for walking to/from school when it's dark in the mornings and evenings, keeps them entertained plus ensures cars can see us better as we walk alongside a very busy road. *Restocked the medicine cabinet with cold/flu season essentials

I also got a bunch of candles, books, autumn craft activities for myself and the kids. I'll be spending this week getting the house and garden prepared for colder weather, it may seem early but I'd rather get it done and out of the way just in case the weather turns faster than expected.

Where did you get window film from if you don't mind me asking? Great ideas you've listed. Thanks.

Tesamoll Thermo Cover Window Insulating Film - Transparent Insulating Foil for Thermal Insulation of Windows - Includes Double Sided Tape for Easy Installation - 1.7 m x 1.5 m https://amzn.eu/d/ijnffY7

This is the one we used, it's a bit fiddly and ideally a two person job to install, you need a hair dryer or heat gun to smooth it out (keep it a distance away otherwise it'll melt the film) but it works really well and is almost invisible once it's all smoothed out and excessive film cut off. Well worth it in my opinion.

Myfanwy81 · 28/08/2024 10:11

Thank you so much for the info. Will try this as ww get terrible condensation on the windows and draughts.

gardenmusic · 28/08/2024 10:23

My daughter-in law. She gets me and gets Autumn. She is also much handier, and 'visually aware'. She looks very autumnal, too. Very decorative.

DrCoconut · 28/08/2024 11:54

@Ohjustalittle my cat eats spiders 🤢

LaSourciereEfrontee · 29/08/2024 06:48

Just made a crumble from apples and blackberries both picked from our track.

I’ve treated myself to this, as I’ve now realised how much I love crumble! www.emmabridgewater.co.uk/products/black-toast-enamel-38cm-roasting-dish-with-handles?variant=15923017056328&currency=GBP&utm_source=awin&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=aff&awc=2642_1724910401_61f87fa0de310ad211a4358ed2ee4be2
