What do you add? Little things to make autumn and winter more tolerable or enjoyable (especially if you are a SAD sufferer like me!)

So far I have -
Vitamin D supplements
Nice herbal teas (spiced apple)
Echinachia drops
Nice hand cream

I already have a Lumea alarm clock and heated blanket!

From the title, I thought this thread was going to be about collecting pine cones and conkers and things. I had visions of mumsnetters skipping through the autumn leaves with wicker baskets over their arms foraging for mushrooms 😀

It is a rather lovely thread though, and I'm enjoying reading it.

3 or 4 books that I really want to read and 3 or 4 bars of chocolate to go with them, but nice chocolate wrapped in foil not plastic. Possibly a really nice version of a childhood favourite too like a nice illustrated version of Wind in the Willows for some nostalgia.

A wool pack from wool warehouse and the crochet pattern or other appropriate craft either oneI could already do or something new, you can get modern style cross stitches etc.

Yes. Stops the munchies too, on a autumn/winter evening when the TV is boring!
Although I probably have enough stash to keep me going all winter 😃 some new patterns would go in the basket.

Vitamins
A jar of Vicks in case
New winter woollies
Socks

😃

Foraging for blackberries so jam jars would have to go in the basket for the bramble jelly (which I might never make!).

Autumn trunk rather than a hamper

More like an autumn house 🤣. I love it. My favourite season. Late august is always exciting for me.

I have a friend who desperately starts looking for any reason for pumpkin spice and wooly jumpers from the moment the kids go back to school (usually in a heatwave).

MagicianMoth · 21/08/2024 09:10

@Theremedy Where do you get your spiced apple tea? I used to love it from M and S but they discontinued it. I did read PPs recipe but would rather buy tea bags!

SlurpSlooChortle · 21/08/2024 09:19

Woodwick candles - they crackle when they burn so sound like a log fire burning.

Twinings Sleep Tea has spiced apple as its main flavour, along with vanilla and camomile. It’s like a hug in a mug.

Thank you for this thread, it's cheered me up because I always find autumn a little bit depressing, it's the thought of those winter months ahead.

Something to get rid of the spiders that start appearing in my house in September maybe!

Conkers. Put them on windowsills.

Ooh we can definitely add a nice wicker basket to the list for skipping through the leaves collecting conkers for home decor!

allaloneandlost · 21/08/2024 09:58

What a great thread!

House projects as if it rains or listing places to go if it doesn't. B&M have autumn decorations.

Needhelp101 · 21/08/2024 10:14

Geez, these threads always end up costing me a lot of money 😁.

Love them, though!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/08/2024 10:14

@Ohjustalittle
Definitely not a cat! They seem to think they are doing you a great favour bringing great big wriggling spiders as presents.

Custard to go with a crumble.
Can’t put it in a basket, but airing winter coats, duvets and blankets outdoors whilst the weather allows.

I’m just in the process of bringing out the throws and blankets and getting them washed ready for use!

Ive had to put a blanket on the end of the bed, my feet have been freezing these last few nights.. still got the summer quilt on.

Might treat myself to a new hot water bottle this autumn for tv snuggling.

Also thinking about autumnal scents for the house, Zoflora used to do one that was called “warm cinnamon” (I think?) which I used to dilute down and use to scent the room, very autumnal.

Definitely an autumnal feel to the weather these last few days🍁

newyear2024 · 21/08/2024 10:19

Kindle and/or selection of paperbacks
Cosy cardigan
Scented candles (pumpkin, cinnamon, sandalwood etc)
M & S essential oil perfumes
Stranger things boxset (netflix not physical)
Autumn decorations for house
Cosy slippers
Cosy blanket

May need more than one basket 🧺

Lurkingandlearning · 21/08/2024 10:42

I agree with @WonderingWanda about scented candles. I had a Dyptique orange one some years ago when I was less frugal. Their prices are eye watering but the scent is (was) so strong they only needed to be lit for a little while and so lasted a long time. It was a little spicy but not as cloying as maybe the spiced pumpkin ones are.

daliesque · 21/08/2024 10:44

I've just discovered Suffolk candles. They are so good and even better than my beloved st eval.

Meadowfinch · 21/08/2024 10:59

Remember to book the chimney sweep and restock the woodpile. 😊

Scented candles for the hearth.
A wool throw for the sofa,
Hand cream, lip balm, lemsip, tissues

I love autumn. I'm busy making jams, cordials and blackberry gin this week.

thequickbrowndog · 21/08/2024 11:00

WeywardCrow · 20/08/2024 14:46

A couple of good newly released books (new Kate Atkinson one)
milk frother for coffee/hit chocolate
soft thick socks

All of this! Plus a nice autumnal scented candle

Pineappleprep · 21/08/2024 11:09

I did an autumn shop last week, £140 but I got absolutely everything for the autumn and even winter months for my whole family.

  • Instant hand warmers, I always keep a couple in my bag for those cold 5am walks to work
  • Hand cream
  • Lip balm
  • New pyjamas for everyone
  • Slippers for both kids
  • Fluffy socks
  • Blankets for the beds
  • Blanket for the sofa, it's leather so gets very cold
  • High strength vitamin D tablets
  • Vitamin D liquid for the kids
  • New hats and gloves for the kids because they've outgrown them from last year
  • Thermos for work so I can take soups/stews
  • Window film, we used it last year as our property has no insulation and it gets really cold, it was amazing, gas bill went down massively and we stopped getting condensation on the windows
  • Glow sticks, my kids use them for walking to/from school when it's dark in the mornings and evenings, keeps them entertained plus ensures cars can see us better as we walk alongside a very busy road. *Restocked the medicine cabinet with cold/flu season essentials

I also got a bunch of candles, books, autumn craft activities for myself and the kids. I'll be spending this week getting the house and garden prepared for colder weather, it may seem early but I'd rather get it done and out of the way just in case the weather turns faster than expected.

SummerSplashing · 21/08/2024 11:11

I need to get my Autumn head on after this weekend (off to a wedding).

I LOVE autumn.

gardenmusic · 21/08/2024 11:13

Been a very humid summer here S.E. Horrible sticky nights.
I just want a few more days to get my curtains washed, then summer can clear off!

80smonster · 21/08/2024 11:23
