Talk me down- lost birth certificate

Today I had a million errands including arranging a photocopy of my child’s BC.
I have the copy but seem to have come home without the original. I called the photocopying place and it’s not there (though left my number in case) and did the same with a few other establishments I visited.

its not a disaster as I purposefully got 3 when he was born so def have two others. However I’m very worried that someone will come across it and somehow use the data on it to clone my son’s identity? It is the full version with full parent info. Also has our (old) address.

how easy/hard/likely would it be for someone to use the BC info in a dodgy way. Assuming it is indeed lost, is there anything I can do?

btw this is not a post natal hormonal thing- DC is 11! Feel terrible.
Not admitted it to DH.

I don’t think they can do much with it tbh.

Justsomethoughts · 19/08/2024 19:33

Can’t do much with a birth certificate. Seem to remember a big emphasis on it not being a form of ID.
the chances are it’s been picked up by someone well meaning and posted to your old address.

I'm happy to be corrected here
.. but O believe you can buy anyones birth certificate online.

DuckBee · 19/08/2024 19:34

Yes you can buy anyone’s online - family history is my hobby.

FawnFrenchieMum · 19/08/2024 19:35

Anyone who has the child’s name & date of birth can buy a copy of a birth certificate. It’s no big deal.

Needanewname42 · 19/08/2024 19:37

Not much you can do. But I wouldn't worry to much.

Re-cloning someone wanting to clone someone elses details are more likely to clone an adult, who is 18 and can have credit, so they can benefit financially.

Anybody can purchase a copy of anyone else's birth certificate. They are matters of public record. I'm not even sure how much detail you need to buy it.

Thank you all. I shall sleep tonight after all.

Amazing that you can get anyone’s BC! I really did not realise that

if it got sent to our old address that would be a good outcome as the woman there has our contact details. Fingers crossed.

What everyone else said.

But why are you so worried about telling your husband?

He will just roll his eyes which I could do without right now
