Does anyone have an issue hearing their iPhone ringing?

I’m so embarrassed the hospital keep ringing my elderly mum when they are trying to reach me. I don’t know what happens but I see the missed calls after the fact. Same with voicemails. I have the volume up to the highest and vibrate is on. It’s a new phone. I can’t think what else so can do. Does anyone else not hear their phone ringing?

IT WAS ON! I must have done it ages ago and then forgotten!

😂 glad it’s sorted!

LittleYellowCloth · 19/08/2024 19:58

Mine’s neither of those things, unfortunately - I use the silent mode button regularly but it’s not that in this instance. Will have a fiddle with all the settings and see if I can sort it out that way.

Also try out all the ring tones some are more ear catching than others. Hubby works with machinery and he has one that sounds like an 'alert' siren

Yes, you either have do not disturb, or sleep mode on.

OR you have this silent mode toggle on the side switched…see photo..the red means it’s on silent. Push it other way and it should ring.

I suffer from this. I put it on silent mode so it doesn't make a tap tap tap noise when I type. But then I forget I silenced it and wonder why I never hear the phone ringing.

You can turn the keyboard sounds off x

I’ve just been on the phone to my friend and she said the exact same thing. The only way she knows her iPhone is ringing is because she has a watch. I really don’t want to buy a watch just so I don’t miss phone calls.

I've had iPhones for years and never had a problem but my latest one often puts itself on silent. I've tried all the obvious things as suggested above but it still does it, sometimes it will show the DND symbol and other times it doesn't.

moppety · 19/08/2024 21:51

Have you tried ringing it yourself OP? Is the issue it's not making sound or what? Have you looked at all the settings and tested them out? My phone at max ringtone is very loud, no way you couldn't hear it if it was nearby, but if it's on silent or on one of the focus settings then the only way I'd know was via my Apple Watch.

That sounds like it either has a timer set or you're accidentally hitting the setting on the Lock Screen (which is annoyingly easy to do). Check you don't have a schedule set for focus. DND for example can be set to turn on overnight.

No it is fine in my flat but then, it’s a small flat.

Mine rings for one or two rings then goes quiet while still receiving the phone call. If I don’t register that first ring, I miss the call. Not sure if I have it on a mode of some sort. My old iPhones never did this…
Also, I don’t like the way my new one doesn’t display a bell icon when I’ve turned the alarm on. It was supposed handy when you’d quickly double check. I mean, why remove it? Again maybe there’s a mode I can switch on. I wouldn’t have a clue…

Do you have a sleep schedule set in the alarm app? It’ll put your phone in DND during your sleep hours

TylerEndicott · 19/08/2024 22:13

No I always have the DND automatically set for 11pm to 7am and never change that, but randomly it will show DND throughout the day too, even if I haven't turned it on. It's not every day, it's completely random, and it's happened to other iPhone users so I know I'm not imagining it. If you look at settings the DND is off and yet the home screen shows the moon symbol, you have to power off completely to get rid.

What is a “known thing”? iPhones ring when they are set to ring. They don’t have faulty ringers.

I didn't say the ringers were faulty. However, as this thread shows, it's not unusual for people not to be able to work out why their IPhones aren't ringing. I'm a huge Apple fan but I think they over complicate some functions. Try googling this problem and you will see that it's a common issue.

Blueuggboots · 20/08/2024 06:47

Make sure the volume is all the way up on the left hand side of the phone,
Choose a different ring tone - I have one I've had for years. It's very distinctive. You can also change the vibrations to make it more obvious.
Sometimes if I have poor signal (my house is like a dead zone for phones!) it will go straight to my voice mail.

FredaFox · 20/08/2024 07:52

My mum issues has issues sometimes just hearing my talk on her iPhone
I've checked everything it's definitely partly user error but there must be something
I've got the volume as high as possible

It's my old iPhone 11 so not massively old

MeYouAndAQuestion · 20/08/2024 08:20

You can also set the phone to flash when you get an incoming call. It's in the accessibility options

EachandEveryone · 21/08/2024 14:01

I can not believe it. It’s just happened again and I was expecting the call from my consultant I was just having my lip waxed there was no sound in there. I even told them I was expecting a call. The minute I walked out of the salon I got an alert to say I had a voicemail.

Oh my. Thank you sooooooo much!

I bought a new (reconditioned) iphone last year and it has never rung. TBF people rarely actually ring me so it's not been a massive problem and I just assumed it was an issue with the phone that I hadn't noticed. I had fiddled around with all the settings but nothing seemed to make a difference.

I wasn't aware of the little red thing on the left hand side - I'm sure my last, very ancient hand me down iphone didn't have one. Sorted 😀
