Help! Been scammed on Vinted

I bought some apparently new trainers on Vinted and realised after I'd rushed to pay that the seller didn't have any feedback and they looked a bit too good to be true re price... So tried to cancel last night but the seller needs to confirm cancellation and they obviously didnt, alerted Vinted that I thought it was a scam and asked them to cancel but auto reply said to wait 48 hours for their reply. Today it's apparently been sent, the item no longer exists when I click on it and the seller has blocked me - only dialogue was me requesting a cancellation.

Anything I can do? I'm imagining getting a box of rocks for my £70 in a few days 😭

Has anyone had anything similar?

If the parcel is being sent to a pick up point then just don't pick it up.

If it's a box of rocks you can report an issue through Vinted and get a refund.

Buyers have more protection than sellers. Don't panic!

How would a scam like this work if buyers are protected? I did get buyer protection though. Do I need to video it being opened? It's being delivered to my home, I'll also likely not be in and it's usually left round the back so likely wouldn't be able to refuse delivery... Would refusing delivery be an option if I could time it being in?

I've heard Vinted aren't very good to the buyer so I'm worried I'll be out of pocked quite a bit. Can't believe I was so stupid!

Just wait for it to be delivered. If it’s not what you expected, raise an issue straight away. Vinted will refund you.
ive had a couple of issues before. One where an item was described as the wrong size. I raised an issue, seller sorted it a return and I was refunded. It takes time but you should get your money back.

GinForBreakfast · 19/08/2024 17:34

Can you open a new account and look at the seller's account from there? It could just be a new/inexperienced seller.

EnidSpyton · 19/08/2024 17:41

Vinted holds the money you pay and doesn't release it to the seller until you as the buyer report that you have received the goods and you are happy with them.

When/if the package arrives and if it's not what you signed up for, you can say that you have an issue and send the evidence, and then Vinted will refund you. They are more on the side of the buyer than the seller.

A seller with no feedback might just be selling something at a good price to attract feedback. Everyone is new to Vinted once, after all. So it might not be dodgy. You can usually tell if it is if their username is just a string of random numbers.

BananaPie · 19/08/2024 17:57

this happened to me. I got a full refund.

if you search for the item again on Vinted, chances are you will find the exact same item with the exact same pictures from the real seller.

the scammer sets up a profile and then takes screen shots of things other people are selling.

when you buy, nothing will actually ever arrive. The scam works because if you as the buyer do not say you have received the item within a certain time of it being marked as shipped (or do not report it missing) the money will go to the seller

NoDramaLlamas · 19/08/2024 18:02

The user name is random letters then random numbers with this picture and no reviews. The trainers were new with tags and less than half price - listing now deleted and I'm blocked. If this doesn't scream scam I dont know what does?

I'll wait til it's delivered and report if needed. Appreciate people saying it may not but it's screams it now I'm looking at it for what it is. Wouldn't usually touch an account like that.

The seller can't block you if you have an open transaction, so if they've disappeared it's because their account has been suspended.
It's a common scam on vinted, new account, random letters and numbers, and you'll get a royal mail tracking number that doesn't exist.
Get on to support and they'll refund you.

NoDramaLlamas · 19/08/2024 18:20

It's an Evri tracking number I've been sent.

I thought the same for a recent purchase (a barely worn reiss woollen coat for £10) but the item did arrive and was in almost perfect condition. So you never know but yes complain to vinted if you do receive a box of rocks for example

Royalegardenchamo · 19/08/2024 18:35

Don't panic, vinted will sort it for you. They usually take a day or so to reply but once they do they're very good. Whatever you do, just don't click the 'everything is ok' button if you collect the parcel as this is what releases your money to the seller.

NoDramaLlamas · 22/08/2024 16:47

Thanks for the replies, update in case anyone's in the same boat in the future.

Vinted emailed me saying they've noticed 'suspicious activity' from the other account and have cancelled the transaction and refunded me yesterday. However, today a very obvious fake of the item I ordered arrived (it's honestly terrible, think 3 year old using a glue gun to put a pair of trainers together.) - I wasn't in so didn't have the option to refuse delivery and there's no return address so I'm throwing them out and trying not to be as impatient and stupid in the future.

Hi, I’ve just done the exact same thing . Ordered a camera quickly as appeared to be a great deal, checked the account and they have no reviews and the name is just loads of random letters. I also used evri home delivery and now it says the item has been sent , I’m scared now that the scammer has my home address and have reported to vinted but did anything else ever come from this with them having your home address?

GarlicSmile · 02/04/2025 01:49

I've done this, too. Too-good-to-be-true item, but people here do report fantastic finds so I went ahead! Purchase never appeared, the tracking number was a fake, and it took me a while to navigate Vinted's complaints system - I think it's been improved now, though.

Anyway, I was refunded and the seller account disappeared.
