Hey Flopsy, midwife here. I am so sorry about what you're going through. Accepting uncertainty is one of the hardest things

Can you call the hospital's maternity ward? I had a call like that, from a young mum who was bleeding at 15 weeks and too anxious to wait for the scan, and I offered her to come to the ward and listen to her baby with the doppler. Obviously warning her that it had the potential to make her more distressed if the baby's heart was not found, but if that had happened, we have a portable USS machine in the ward and I would have called the registrar to do a bedside scan.

We could hear her baby loud and clear, and that gave her energy and strength to wait until her scan.

5 months ago I went to a house to pick up something I had ordered in marketplace. The woman who opened the door broke into a massive smile when she saw me. I knew I knew her from somewhere but couldn't quite pick it up. She asked me to wait and went to pick up a gorgeous, chubby baby and put her in my arms. "You were right, she was ok!". I got something in my eye on the way back home.

Although it is impossible to know without a scan, I am hoping that the blood may be coming from a small early retroplacental bleed, which is an accummulation of blood that sometimes happens when the placenta implants. When this happens early in pregnancy, often women keep bleeding until the pocket of blood empties naturally (not to mistake for the retroplacental haemorrhage that sometimes happens closer to term when there is a placental abruption, so if you google it take this into consideration). If this is what it is, then often the little bag of blood empties and the pregnancy continues as normal.

Right now your uterus is the strongest protection for your baby. There is nothing you can do proactively to protect her, which is incredibly frustrating, except to wish and hope she is ok. Please keep us posted. Big, big hugs!

How lovely x

So sorry that you are going through this uncertainty, OP. I have been there myself a few years ago. I did try A&E but they didn't have a scanner or anyone who could scan or use a Doppler, so unless you're bleeding so heavily that you're concerned for yourself or have any other reason to be concerned for yourself, I wouldn't go. I have everything crossed for you.

This is so kind thank you. The maternity ward will only see me if I’m over 16 weeks unfortunately and appreciate they’re very busy.

thank you for your kind message xx

I had a scan at about 11 weeks. Then a couple of days later, I got out of bed and there was a giant gush of blood all over the floor. I have never seen so much blood. They told me to go to a&e because of how heavily I was bleeding. They managed to get me over to the EPU and they scanned me and found a heartbeat. Then they got me to come back for another scan a few days later - in the interim I bled constantly - heavier than the heaviest period I'd ever had.

When I went for second scan they found pretty massive haematoma. Something like 10cm x 10cm x 3cm. And that was after a few days of bleeding. It was still there at my 20 week scan but much smaller and the bleeding slowed down a lot.

My DS was born at 39+5 perfectly healthy.

I know it's easier to say than do but please stay away from Google. Google is not your friend!

Sending all the positive vibes! Xx

I have had heavy bleeding in a pregnancy which turned out fine (child at university now) but also a few miscarriages. The difference was that the miscarriages moved on to passing clots.

How long did it take to progress to clots? X

Can you book a private scan today for reassurance? I appreciate this is not an option for everyone financially and logistically.

@YourBusyTurtle
I would stay on literal bed rest today if you can (or sofa if your bathrooms downstairs).
This morning ring the nhs scan unit a few times for cancellations.
Google and see if there are any more private facilities offering scans which might have availability today.
I wouldn’t call an ambulance, in any event you won’t get seen any more quickly than if your partner drove you in.

Thank you I’m just led in bed currently and have left a voicemail with EPU

They just called back and said they have no scans today. They were quite abrupt tbh

For me, there's nothing like reading spooky stories to take my mind off things. I went through a lot of Creepy Pasta waiting in A&E to get my bleeding checked out.

Son is currently downstairs babbling at Daddy.
