The lengths I go to for blackberries

Nettle stings, bramble scratches and sunburn. Ow. I don't even really eat them myself although blackberry vodka at Christmas is nice. I'm convinced there is some weird evolutionary thing where I see them hanging there and have to get them.

Why do I do this to myself?

Thank you @Wahine24

Slight setback today as I am covered in bites which google says may be harvest mites from the brambles. Chiggers
I will be well covered next time!

@UnaOfStormhold lovely. We make damson gin the same way. Can you do blackberries with vodka or gin or does it have to be brandy

I do vodka.

We are in Cornwall and have a big hedge all round our garden with plenty of brambles growing in it, I picked over a kilo of them today. We also have apple trees so most of them have been cooked up for bramble jelly and the rest are steeping in vodka for Christmas.

It has been a stellar year and there are plenty more to come. I adore B&A crumble, but am trying to lose weight. What to do!? 🤷‍♀️

I volunteer at a museum which is a recreated Victorian town and I dress Victorian. Every blackberry season I pick the blackberries. The kids visiting the museum see me picking the blackberries they ask me what am I doing like they don't know what blackberries are,

@Breadcat24 @MrsTerryPratchett As well as vodka and gin you can use overproof rum. It has a much higher alcohol content so you don't need to use as much sugar.

Appalonia · 22/08/2024 00:41

Ooh I know! Where I live there's 3 streets with loads of them. No-one else seems to be bothered picking them. Yesterday I went to pick up a parcel and unwrapped it so I could pick some and put my haul in the plastic packaging!😁

When you find yourself always armed with an empty ice cream tub, you know you've got a problem.

Ha! This is me.

Appalonia · 22/08/2024 00:49

LOVING all the alcohol recipes! Definitely going to go get me some more blackberries tomorrow...😂

Flumpaphone · 22/08/2024 08:25

We make wine, about 3.5 lbs will make 6 bottles. So far I have enough for 18 bottles in the freezer and I'm still picking!

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 22/08/2024 08:37

@TonTonMacoute I'm trying to be good too so have just had a frozen blackberry, banana and nat yoghurt smoothie for breakfast. I get my blackberry fix with no added sugar. Yummy!

Thelnebriati · 22/08/2024 12:41

@Flumpaphone A blend of 2 - 3lb blackberries plus 1/2 - 1 pint blackcurrant Hi Juice or red grape juice makes a lovely full bodied red.

Its lovely with a vanilla pod as well.

Breadcat24 · 24/08/2024 14:05

Just to let you know 75ml of Gordon's gin is on sale in Aldi at £12.99.

UnaOfStormhold · 24/08/2024 21:46

@Breadcat24 I've never tried blackberries with gin or vodka but it sounds like you can! I do sloe gin and elderflower gin (not a vodka fan!) but find the warmer, less herbal taste of brandy suits the blackberry flavour.
