What bedroom allocation works best

Battykodas · 18/08/2024 11:21

19yo works full time, stays mostly at partners house

16yo stays every other weekend

12yo full time

All same sex

2 bedrooms between them. One standard double, one large double

how Would you split it?

LivelyBlake · 18/08/2024 11:24

Standard double for 12 yo as long as it’s roomy enough for desk, wardrobe etc

The other one can be shared

Psychologymam · 18/08/2024 11:24

Standard double for full time, large between the other two with some good contract setting - no coming in inebriated etc for the 19 yr old! However sounds like blended family so there’s probably dynamics I’m unaware of!

Mil3nnial · 18/08/2024 11:24

The obvious answer would be the older two share the larger room and the 12 year old has the smaller one

Are there other considerations such as is the 16 y o doing a levels soon?

19 and 16 year old in large double, 12 year old in small double maybe. He is the only one there full time so should have his own space.

redtrain123 · 18/08/2024 11:25

12 year old one room - standard double

19 year old and 16 year old each has single bed in large double bedroom

Harveyballwanger · 18/08/2024 11:25

I’d give the 12 yo the standard double and the other 2 share the large double. Does the 19yo pay rent? That could potentially change things.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 18/08/2024 11:25

The 16 yo shares with someone and they have the bigger room (with a decent layout, eg room divider). Not sure who the other sharer is, whichever two get on best.

The OP says all same sex.

Agree with most PP. 12 year old gets standard double to himself. Older 2 share large double.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 18/08/2024 11:27

I quoted before you edited, sorry.

TickingAlongNicely · 18/08/2024 11:29

How often are the 16yo and 19yo both there at the same time?

InTheRainOnATrain · 18/08/2024 11:31

12YO gets the smaller room to themselves. Older 2 ‘share’ but it doesn’t sound like they actually overlap that much if one is mostly at their boyfriend’s and the other is only every other weekend so it’s probably more like a hot desking sort of arrangement!

DelphiniumBlue · 18/08/2024 11:32

What do they want to do?
I've had surprising answers and suggestions from my 3 at various times- what I learned was that the allocation needs to be flexible and not necessarily permanent.
At one time we had oldest and youngest in together ( 8 year age gap), with middle DC in a box room, but they then had a games room complete with big TV and a sofa. I never would have thought of that, but it was what they wanted.
So I would talk to them and find out what they would like and how they think they can make it fair.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 18/08/2024 11:36

Can the larger room be split with a room divider? I would put the part time residents in the same room and the 12 year old in the smaller room.

EndorsingPRActice · 18/08/2024 11:41

As the 16 and 19 year olds are only sleeping at your house infrequently I’d give them single beds in the standard double between them, and the larger room for the full time house occupant. I might change my mind if either of the older ones needs full desk space for studying / working and is using the bedroom for that regularly. If I had some money I would consult all of them on the best layout / furniture to suit them and make it work well, but would NOT consult them on who sleeps where.

pizzaHeart · 18/08/2024 11:55

If there are not any other issues e.g additional needs agree with everyone - standard double for 12 y.o. and the bigger one for sharing (regardless of exams imo)

sunshineandshowers40 · 18/08/2024 13:07

Are they all siblings?

Greytulips · 18/08/2024 13:11

I’d say the 16 year old is with their mother in the week.

19 year old is OPs daughter

And 12 year old is OPs daughter

Hence OP prefers the 19 year old to have their own room and the occasional 16 year to share with 12 year old - who probably doesn’t like it.

DH wants 16 year old to have her own space.

To be fair the 12 year old could have the biggest bedroom and then share with the dripping by 19 year old -

Then the 16 year old would get their own room

Tumbleweed101 · 18/08/2024 13:12

If the 19yo pays rent I'd give them the smaller room and have the younger two share. This way the 12yo gets the larger space for the majority of the time. If possible with the layout perhaps section off the 16yo section so they have some privacy when they stay - this bed could also be used for 12yo sleep overs at other times.

Tumbleweed101 · 18/08/2024 13:14

Also if 19yo isn't there when 16yo is they could use that room during their stay so they have more privacy.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/08/2024 14:52

Agree the qn of rent is important. If they pay it, I'd give them the smaller double and the other two share. If they have their own room, might they stay at yours with partner more? Would you want this?

Was going to go with the consensus of small to 12 yo and older ones share, but it occurs to me the largest room is only used a few days a month so if the other one is large enough for two singles and privacy, I'd probably give the 12 to the biggest

Floralnomad · 18/08/2024 14:59

Standard double for the 12 yo and the others share xx

No rent being paid

This has been really helpful, thank you for replies.
I had thought 12 yo in the bigger room with a sofabed. 16yo and 19yo to share the double but 16yo in with 12yo if all home at the same time. However, the older two then don’t have a ‘permanent’ allocated space.

so perhaps older two in larger room and 12yo in the smaller works best

19 & 16 yo share the large double. 12 yo gets the smaller double
