We spotted this spider on the garden shed yesterday, I’ve been looking online but can’t find one that looks like it. Any ideas?

It’s an Opilio or harvestman. Nothing scary

I'm not sure that's a spider, it's not got the 2 separated body parts.

Well observed - they're not actually spiders, they're in the Arachnida class, but they have their own order of Opiliones.

They do have two segments, but much like a lot of us (sigh), they have a very thick waist compared to spiders.

No silk, no bite to affect humans, no web.

His name is Augustine Opilino and he was the leading authority on music of The Renaissance and toured Europe giving lectures at leading universities. Sadly, following the loss of three of his legs during an accident on a Eurostar, he had to retire and now gives gardening advice online. He has his own website and is also getting into podcasting.

On a happier note, his legs did in fact grow back, so he has recently taken up Hatha Yoga.

Extra pointless information (yeah, I'm not entirely sure how this stuff sticks in my head, either) is that they eat, they don't drink their food, some of the species have tiny claws on their first antennae - makes sense when they are also very distantly related to Horseshoe crabs, sea scorpions and the like - and, best of all, unlike spiders, the males actually have a penis.

So that washing you let get darked on has had Opilio penii over it.

Thank you, very interesting explains why I couldn’t find it online. Wasn’t worried about it just interested as not seen one before.

See, pure genius at work! 😊

What's the point in a make without one?!
