Perimenopause... can your periods simply stop suddenly?

I am 48 and till now my periods have been fairly regular for my whole life. Occasionally I have had an early one, and once in the last year I bled for a bit longer than normal, but last 3 periods were right on the dot and completely normal.

I am almost 3 weeks late now, which had never happened to me at all, a couple of days I felt as if my period was coming, but nothing. I have no other apparent symptoms.

I guess my question is, has any of you experienced such a sudden disappearance of periods instead of some years of irregular ones until they stop and you're officialy in menopause?

I would be delighted to never have a period again, but having to take pads everywhere just in case it comes any day is a bit of a pain. I am trying to figure out the odds that I am just having a late one.

And yes, I have done a sneaky pregnancy test. I was sterilised at 32, so if there had been a baby at 48 I would call him McGyver.

Yep - they gotta stop some time.

I carried pads/suppplies for a few months - just in case.

I don't know but am 52 and in the same boat as you wondering when my periods will stop. Twice in last year though I had longer cycles an 8 week one and 6 week one so all bets are off I would say!

They can just go a bit mad. Mine are mostly regular still, but I’ve had two patches in the last year or two where I’ve gone 100 days between periods. You’re probably just going to miss one or two, I’d guess.

Yes, I was just expecting years of unpredictable ones as most of my friends have had, with hot flushes and other unpleasant symptoms. I would thank my lucky stars if this was it, although I don't want to jinx it!

Thank you, yes that may be what this is. Just a long one. I am just ridiculously excited I may not have any more. Fingers crossed!

Yes, this happened to me! Totally regular and normal periods (normal for me I mean), then one month just no period showed up and that was it. Few weeks later crazy hot flushes kicked in (since settled with HRT).

Damn so you can still get all the nasty symptoms after your periods have gone. i have realised how little information I had about perimenopause despite working with women all the time.

Yes unfortunately. Up until my periods suddenly stopped I had no symptoms other than trouble sleeping (which I didn’t connect the dots was perimenopause). Then periods stopped and then the flushes started …. I’m glad I started HRT quickly as really did help flushes, sweats and poor sleep.

HotChocWine · 17/08/2024 07:24

Just had this for the 1st time, almost 48.
8 weeks gap then a period that wasn't as bad as usual

Cobblersorchard · 17/08/2024 07:28

I’m 46 and having random very long cycles. I had a 120 day cycle earlier this year. Then they went back to normal for a bit. Currently on day 67.

Before that they were completely regular, and I only stopped breastfeeding at 43 as had DD at 41.

Meredusoleil · 17/08/2024 07:54

I could have written your post myself OP! Recently turned 49 and earlier this year, managed to get to nearly 3 months with no period. Then had 3 periods about 3 weeks apart each 🤦‍♀️

Now nothing again for more than 4 weeks. Fingers crossed that's it now, as I am so done with periods (started them aged 10).

Meredusoleil · 17/08/2024 07:55

PS I was also sterilised aged 39.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/08/2024 08:25

I'm 53. About 18 months ago I realised I hadn't had a period for a while. No real other symptoms, but I did have a baby when I was nearly 41, so per symptoms may have been masked by the exhaustion of having a new baby.
