As Summer is drawing to a close, what are your favourite and least favourite months of the year? And am I the only one who likes January...?

Here's mine from favourite to least favourite:

1: October
2: January
3: February
4: July
5: August
6: September
7: May
8: April
9: December
10: November
11: June
12: March

I'm happy May-Dec. After Christmas everything goes to shit and it doesn't start getting nice again until after Easter.

whatthejuice · 17/08/2024 06:56

Love this thread! Mine are -

  1. May
  2. June
  3. September
  4. October
  5. December
  6. August
  7. July
  8. November
  9. April
10. January 11. March 12. February

It's only really February I struggle with! Number 1-8 I absolutely love!

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 17/08/2024 07:02

I really dislike November - it's dark, dull and expensive. Just long run up for Christmas.
I don't much like March. Feels like it should be warmer or less wet than it enviably is.

I love January! New start, Christmas done, my birthday and the general expectation from everyone is low. And the days get noticeably brighter.
Then it's summer months in order May, June, July and August.

Every other month has good and bad bits.

JustSaying101

July just seems more of a hyper month or something?! Plus it is generally either too hot or everyone complaining about the weather, pressure to go places/ do stuff with the kids whereas the rest of the summer we get stuff done but it’s less pressure (or expense!). Great thread by the way, so interesting and fun!!!

I like most months for different reasons except for the dreary post Christmas winter stretch. I’d love to live in Australia or somewhere warm for Jan/Feb/March every year. I almost forgot about August - low down for me as it’s always a bit disappointing somehow.

Charlie2121 · 17/08/2024 07:39

March is my favourite. Cheltenham festival and the football season coming towards a climax.

December probably my least favourite as I’m not really a Christmas person.

September - feels like an exciting new start even though I have no kids / no back to school. Also my birthday month.

October - December for the beauty of Autumn and then Christmas celebrations

Always love Spring and Summer for the warm weather, long evenings and holidays

January - February I have to brace myself. I love the fresh start of the new year but apart from that the cold and dark can feel endless. More significantly though I think everyone’s mood is lower following the Christmas period and you can feel it!

This is me too.

I hate Christmas. I hate the work that goes into. The expectation from schools that I've got nothing better to do than attend 12 concerts in 2 weeks (both dc are musicians and play in umpteen bands), the shopping, the cooking, the airport runs, the family politics, the expectation.

I adore the look and feel of early Autumn. September and early October are perfect. But I find November a real struggle for some reason. December only gets a high placing coz of Christmas, which I love.

Crunchymum · 17/08/2024 08:01

Interesting.

Took a bit of deliberation but here goes
(Fave to least fave)

December (love the festive period and shared good cheer from most people. Everyone seems to be excited / happy / positive albeit busy and skint!!)
September (love the fresh start and getting back into a routine after summer)
November (love the build up to the festive period)
October (usually have a UK holiday and have good weather)
June
May
July
August
April
January (have two family birthdays but also this is the month of "new beginnings" and we usually declutter / budget well)
February
March (always find by March I've had enough of shit weather, dark nights etc)

Some months have reasons for being liked / disliked. The rest I just ranked.

CeeJay81 · 17/08/2024 08:08

I love Christmas! but not the rest of Winter. Also late Spring/Early Summer is great but don't like hot uk weather. March occasionally would be higher as its mine and dh's birthdays but we rarely do anything much for it. So instead just feel older lol.

I basically hate Christmas and dark evenings.

Agree with this.

And to the PP saying why don't people like September, it's the mental dread of knowing summer is over and months of cold and dark are coming. The month itself is usually quite nice, but you just know what's coming...

awaynboilyurheid · 17/08/2024 08:26

January is my birthday but also my least favourite month, it’s so dark in the West of Scotland dark in the mornings getting dark by 3, it’s freezing, no one has any money after Christmas and I’ve had heavy snow quite a few years now meaning I haven’t been able to go out for my birthday!
By end February things are improving can see light at the end of a dark winter.
March April getting better
May is a lovely month here, light nights quite often some sun think it’s my favourite month.
June July August are good for the light I’ve been reading in my garden up till 10pm the light is so lovely. The weather varies this summer has not been great had very few sunny days I think we’ve only eaten dinner in the garden a handful of times
September can be nice
October not good painful bereavement anniversaries
November unlike lots on here I like the run up to Christmas takes my mind off the above month
December I love Christmas so a nice month even if weather is cold/ damp/ icy / or snowy

My favourite months are not really about warmth, it's about light evenings and mornings.

Last equal - November, December, January, February, March

More about light than heat. I hate the dark, dreich days of winter which usually starts in about October here. There's not really much of an autumn, tbh.

100% this

miredo · 17/08/2024 08:54

October, November and May are my favourites. I absolutely love autumn and early summer, but I also quite like August.
One of my least favourites is March too. I always think of icy cold winds in March. My absolute least favourite is February.

I am in my August malaise. I like September for the back to school new beginning feeling of it. August is rubbish. The weather is never as good as it should be, often humid and overcast. The garden is going to shit and looks rubbish (And/or I've lost the energy to maintain it/fight the slugs), I've got summer regret about not doing all the summer things I wanted and/or the summer holidays are getting too expensive or trying. I always feel depressed in August.

I love autumn and December is Christmas and all our birthdays, so fun but frenetic.

May is best of all. The prettiest and most gentle of all the months.
