As Summer is drawing to a close, what are your favourite and least favourite months of the year? And am I the only one who likes January...?

Here's mine from favourite to least favourite:

1: October
2: January
3: February
4: July
5: August
6: September
7: May
8: April
9: December
10: November
11: June
12: March

1- February (because the low position of the sun means I get really spectacular long golden shadows through the house)
2- October ( just beautiful with the leaves, crisp air)
3-May (everything is growing and green and lush)
4-August ( spectacular skies at dusk)
5- November (starts to feel festive but without all the stress)
6- September
7- December
8-January (because the stress of Xmas is over)
9-June
10-July
11-March
12- April

Why do you dislike March?

Mine are probably

December
August
May
July
October
April
February
November
March
September
June
January

It was a really tough choice between June and March! Personally, I find March a bit of a slow moving month following February, even when there are usually a million things going on. The run up to Easter felt incredibly long this year!

January second best and least fave March?! Here are mine

  1. June
  2. May
  3. July
  4. April
  5. August
  6. March
  7. September
  8. October
  9. November
10. December 11. February 12. January

My favourite months are not really about warmth, it's about light evenings and mornings.

New year and all that jazz! Yes, it's freezing - although we've been lucky to get some crisp January sunshine in the past.

I love spring and summer and mostly hate autumn and winter.

Favourite times:

Spring blossom
Long midsummer days
August - holiday month and relatively warm seas
Christmas

Least favourite times:

The January blues (and there seem to be only two weather options, rainy and too cold for rain)
The transition from summer to autumn in September
The commercial build up to Christmas - it’s ghastly

Edited

Agree, the build up to Christmas seems to get earlier every single year.

I hate the Winter, and this time of year (August) I find depressing as everything in the garden is going over, nights are drawing in, and I feel that winter is approaching

Summer to early Autumn is my absolute favourite time of year. The light, the warm, long days, more things to do, shorts and t-shirts, ice creams in the park, my birthday! It's the best. December is only as high up as it is because of Christmas.

Can't believe how low down September is on everyone's list. It's the King of months surely!

Not if you're my DH it isn't! He is quite a SAD person and the diminishing light in UK really is noticeable in Sept. It's almost imperceptible from end Jun thru July, Aug it starts to be noticeable in the mornings (it's dark at 530am now whereas in May it's light at 4am) and by Sept it is feeling autumnal. So poor DH is already dreading the winter darkness in Sept!

Whereas I'm completely governed by the gardening year, so for me, I love Oct / Nov because I'm collecting up leaves for mulch, loving a bonfire to get rid of the dead branches and debris. And Feb will be awesome this coming year because I planted a load of snowdrops and crocus so I'm looking forward to see them heralding in the Spring 😊

I love the summer and especially the warmth and golden light of August. I’ve adored the heat of this month. Then the slow glide into autumn that is September October (and October weekends spent planting up bulbs with cups of tea and the radio in the garden. Heaven).

June and July are up there as they lead into the summer heat (albeit with a heavy dose of rainfall these days).

Then the spring months because the bulbs planted in October are going bonkers. Jan and Feb are the beginnings of hope for the year ahead (and more early bulbs).

November is a ‘nothing’ month. December is last as I hate Christmas and find it a spectacularly depressing time of year.

Lengokengo · 17/08/2024 06:11
  1. September & October
  2. june & may
  3. July and august
  4. March, April, November
  5. jan and feb
  6. December.

used to love Christmas, but now I have 2 other events to plan for in December, plus it’s busy at work so December is officially a completely f” ing slog from beginning to end and I spend jan and feb recovering. Every year I hope it will get better. Never does!

i had a similar conversation years ago about seasons. I was the only one that loved autumn best. Everyone else chose spring or summer. No fool chose winter.

NewMe2024 · 17/08/2024 06:12

September - feels like an exciting new start even though I have no kids / no back to school. Also my birthday month.

October - December for the beauty of Autumn and then Christmas celebrations

Always love Spring and Summer for the warm weather, long evenings and holidays

January - February I have to brace myself. I love the fresh start of the new year but apart from that the cold and dark can feel endless. More significantly though I think everyone’s mood is lower following the Christmas period and you can feel it!

Overall I'm a Autumn/ winter lover but I must admit May and June have the most pleasant weather. I'm a big fan of Christmas and Christmas prep hence nov and Dec are high up. Oct is often beautiful July is too hot. March and April are just boring. I'm a teacher so September is long and depressing.

endofsummerevenings · 17/08/2024 06:50

Love them all

January - fresh start. And snowdrops.

February - crocuses and my wedding anniversary! I think February is winter into spring.

March - daffodils and other spring flower, such a lovely month and Easter some years

April - Easter holidays, start of spring

May - just beautiful. And spring into summer.

June - long summer evenings and warmth sometimes

July - DDs birthday and break up from school

August - school holidays

September - my birthday and a lovely month in terms of start of autumn, misty mornings and another fresh start.

October - Halloween and the dark nights start which I like, they’re so atmospheric.

November - beautiful month and the start of winter (November may and February are what I think of as transition months.)

December - Christmas! And DS’s birthday.
