Spurts of ageing at 44 and 60

According to a new study, there are two, not one, time periods in our lives when we show sudden signs of ageing. There is a burst of ageing at 44, and then at 60, accoriding to research done at Stanford University in the US. This busts the general notion that our bodies and minds decline in a slow process, referred to as 'linear ageing'.

Has this been your experience?

Exactly - I’m calling fake news

Sparrowball · 15/08/2024 23:55

44 was definitely the turning point for me too, I'm dreading turning 60 after reading this. I'll enjoy the next 9 years until the next great decline.

SoManyTshirts · 15/08/2024 23:59

I didn’t notice 44 … had a lot going on in those days. Maybe that’s when the bunions started.
60 was when my joints started to hurt for real.

MidnightMeltdown · 16/08/2024 00:01

Bloody hell. I'm not 40 yet and this thread is already making me dread the day I turn 44!

Yes, I was going to say the same thing.

CherryVanillaPie · 16/08/2024 00:24

Just before and after the meno for me, early 50s. Thinner hair, went from no health issues to higher cholesterol and sore hip too.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 16/08/2024 00:45

I got a grey hair at 40.
But was still ok all the way through. Thought I'd got away with it til I turned 50 and a couple months later I swear things aged suddenly.

peanutbuttertoasty · 16/08/2024 00:59

Well this is fucking depressing!! 😳😭

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 16/08/2024 01:09

Definitely noticed a big step downward at 45. I was kind of doing fine. 44 definitely began preparing me for the sudden ageing I experienced between 45 and 46.
My late 40s to now, 52, have been kind. I’ve settled into the ageing face that showed up 7 years ago. I’ll check back in at 60! I will say, my body’s in more pain- joints are a mess. I’m tired out more easily.

MattDamon · 16/08/2024 07:50

For those freaking out, use it for motivation! 40s is a good time focus on building and maintaining muscle to fight against degeneration.

moonplop · 16/08/2024 07:55

This seems true, I'm 46 and was shocked to my core at needing reading glasses at about age 44. I've had perfect eyesight my entire life- people used to seek me out to read teeny tiny print because it was so good. Now I need glasses to read and I am quite sad about it

40s is a good time focus on building and maintaining muscle to fight against degeneration

Also absolutely agree with this- I do weight training regularly and its fantastic for health

RandomMess · 16/08/2024 08:02

I wonder separating the study by sex would change those ages by much.

Women are for more affected by hormones than men surely?

GreenShady · 16/08/2024 08:14

My rapid aging point has been 55 - pretty much sailed through 40s and early 50s but from around 55 the changes have come fast.

So not sure whether I'm due another big aging step around 60 or maybe that one will be a bit later too- 65 maybe?!

DancingLions · 16/08/2024 08:17

For me I'd say it was 48/49 when I really aged. At 44 I was still relatively youthful, then I seemed to age 10 years overnight close to turning 50. Which did coincide with the start of peri.

I'm 55 now and look it, but yes the aging does seem to have slowed for now. Guess I'll look forward to 60 then!

MerryTraveller · 16/08/2024 08:49

I've noticed that people who "look after themselves" most noticeably aged 55-60 for women, and men aged 65-70. Obviously lifestyle can bring that ten-twenty years forward.

fussychica · 16/08/2024 09:30

I agree with the age spurts theory but feel the timing was a bit different for me looking back at photos most our aging seems to have been packed into the last couple of years since we hit our mid 60s. DH has always looked young for his age and still does, bastard! However, I know he suffers with quite a few aches and pains now. We lived abroad in our late 40s and 50s and I think that the outdoor lifestyle really helped. I'm expecting another bout mid 70s.

LittleMy77 · 16/08/2024 09:37

Yep, within a year of reaching 44 I needed varifocals, peri menopause kicked in, weight loss through previous methods stalled and my skin started to change. A lot of that is related to peri, but everything happening within the same year was a shock!

ErrolTheDragon · 16/08/2024 09:56

I've not read the paper in detail, it looks like some of the changes detected were not necessarily the more obvious signs of aging, they included alterations in response to caffeine, alcohol and carbohydrates.
Some of this could be quite useful to bear in mind.

Meanwhile, I happened to look at my medical records online ... a 'frailty index' score has appeared out of the blue. ConfusedHmm It looks like this is something auto generated from 36 possible metrics already in their system... of which I've evidently got one, though I can't find out anywhere what those metrics are. It also looks like they're meant to do it for over 65s so they're a bit early for me.

Meadowwild · 16/08/2024 10:00

I was quite reassured to read that.

I was sixty recently and overnight my body aged. Like the 'keep trying' valve was turned off. Within weeks of turning sixty, my boobs and stomach drooped, my face was covered with wrinkles. I was so shocked, as mentally I was really looking forward to this age and the freedom it brings now adult DC are settled and my life is my own again. I thought I must be doing something wrong. But reading this, I realise it is just a jump and with luck will now slow down. I definitely look my age. I just need to keep looking this age until I'm 80! :)

PolkaStripeShirt · 16/08/2024 10:07

That so interesting! So aged 43 I had this burning urge, like I've never felt this urge in my life ever before, to start lifting heavy weights in the gym. I just wanted to lift.

I did 6 months with a PT lifting heavy 3 timed a week and significantly built muscle mass and felt amazing.

I'm now 44 and I am absolutely positive that doing that has helped. I do feel quite tired but no other signs of ageing.

PolkaStripeShirt · 16/08/2024 10:09

Ooh I also quit alcohol aged 43, not intentional but wasn't drinking much anyway. I also get very tired in response to sugar so try and avoid too much.

Carbs....you can prise carbs out of my cold dead hands but I could probably cut down a little.
