Dinner in Windsor

Colleague and I are staying overnight in Windsor tonight, it’s not actually that far from me but I never really go. Any recommendations for somewhere good for dinner that’s not a chain? Don’t think colleague has any allergies and the only thing they don’t eat is beetroot. I could check trip advisor but I thought I’d see if anyone could recommend something personally!
We both eat meat, I’m not keen on fish but there’s usually other stuff available even in fish restaurants so no real dietary requirements.

The Plate at number 6. Seriously the best Tapas I've ever had. (Been back 4 times 😁) all really good - the sea bass is excellent (when they have it...) as is the steak.
A La Russe is good too.

Just seen you aren't keen on fish. Plenty on the menu that isn't fish!

KingOfPoundbury · 14/08/2024 13:31

One usually eats at our Castle, when in Windsor and it's very good but I'm afraid (not) that they don't let oiks in.
(Even one of the family has to eat alone 😂)

I hear from my Toothpaste Valet that Browns, in the town, is rather nice. It's a brasserie, is that a sort of chain? I don't know.

TheChosenTwo · 14/08/2024 13:43

Thanks @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats - will look at those, I do love tapas!

haha @KingOfPoundbury - they definitely won’t be letting us in 😂

Yes Browns is a chain, it’s just nice to go to somewhere that you can’t get everywhere. I don’t have anything against a chain I must add!

I know you said not a chain, but the Cote, just over the bridge, so strictly in Eton, is in the most amazing location and is lovely to be in.

I was going to say exactly this.

It was great when it was the House on the Bridge 😁.
Great location I agree (especially the seats that overlook the river) - but it is a Cote.

Depends on what you fancy - loads of choice in Windsor - all the suggestions above are good, but will also throw in Sebastian’s if you like Italian, or Cattle Grid for a good steak or ribs!

Vermin · 14/08/2024 14:37

+1 for Sebastian’s!

MissingLists · 14/08/2024 15:32

Sebastians is a (tiny) chain with lovely Italian food.
Antalya is a lovely, small, family-run Turkish restaurant which I've always enjoyed.
The Two Brewers is a tiny pub next to the Long Walk, which does lovely food.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 14/08/2024 16:02

I've not been but I've heard nothing but good things about Gogo's up by the racecourse.

I like Brown's, it's also a nice location by the river.

InThePottingShed · 14/08/2024 16:16

Another vote for Sebastians

Foreverhope1 · 14/08/2024 16:35

Fairly sure that Bel and the Dragon in Windsor closed during Covid and never reopened.

Another vote for The Plate. Absolutely lovely food and the staff are excellent.

Wishitsnows · 14/08/2024 17:43

A la Russe, Patch on the plaza or Greens has just opened. if you walk over Eton Bridge Gilbys. For cocktails there is Incognito.

TheChosenTwo · 14/08/2024 17:49

Loads of choices, thanks!
I booked The Plate but looks like they’ve got some really great places, we did actually take ds to the cattle grid a while ago, I forgot 😂 he’s a big steak fan and we thought it was pretty nice.
Definitely going to try out a few more of these suggestions, we really don’t live far but I just never head this way for some reason.
