Dental extraction - any Dentists on here?

Posting here for traffic.

DS14 had an impacted molar removed under GA on Monday. He's got dissolvable stitches but his inside cheek seems to be attached to them. Does this sound usual? It seems odd.

His cheek is extremely swollen and he's in pain. I don't remember having this when my wisdom tooth was removed. He's on antibiotics.

Any advice appreciated.

Hopeful bump!

Trying again.

Every number the hospital gave me rang out. So frustrating.

Have you tried calling 111? They might be able to help

Difficult to say, it may just be swollen, which could be normal.
How is he feeling, temperature, illness ?
Could you take a photo?

Glassstillhalffull · 14/08/2024 21:19

No I haven't - his pain has subsided over the last few hours (ibuprofen) although he's still very swollen.
It was more my question about whether it's normal for inside cheek to be attached to the stitches, so I doubt 111 would be able to help. Thank you though. If it does get worse I will.

If it was a GA job and impacted probably a difficult one so lots of post op and swelling to be expected unfortunately

The good news is the mouth is one of the fastest healing sites in the body. What do the post op instructions say?

I tried to take a photo but can't get a good view as his jaw aches so much. It does look slightly less 'attached' though so you're probably right - just swelling. Thanks

He's fine in himself, no temperature. The swelling isn't 'hot' swelling. That's true, I hadn't appreciated that it was probably difficult to remove.

We didn't see the surgeon after the op, but the nurses said to salt-water rinse 4x a day and give ibuprofen/paracetamol.

Thanks for replies!

OP I am not a dentist but I do know that for some bigger or more complex extractions they actually stitch the gum to the cheek I not sure why exactly but something to do with protecting the socket maybe? Its not permanent and stitches will just dissolve away I think.

Glassstillhalffull · 14/08/2024 21:36

Oh that's interesting, thanks. They are dissolvable stitches.

Sounds normal after a difficult surgical wisdom tooth extraction.

If you google it you will find lots coming up x

When I had dental surgery the orthodontic surgeon stitched my gum to my top lip 🤢 it felt very strange but within a fortnight it was well on the way to being healed!

I could never get a response from calling the number they supplied either..!
