What's the oldest electrical appliance in your house...

...that still works? Ours is a hand whisk (one of those with twin beaters) which was part of a mixing set that my DM won in a work raffle in 1983.

Oldest one I definitely know the date of is the Kenwood Chefette - 1972. I suspect the electric hand whisk is a little older, but can't be certain.

Me too! Mines from 1971 and was a present on my 8th birthday.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/08/2024 08:09

It was a 1970s Kenwood, but that literally burst into flames a few years ago. It's probably my early 90s hifi separates.

DM has an extremely electrically dodgy table lamp from about 1930. It may not be on its first wiring though.

LillyLeaf · 13/08/2024 08:13

Sewing machine (Toyota) from 1999, I got it for passing my GCSEs and used it yesterday. Works just fine but is simple.

newpussmum · 13/08/2024 08:22

Good grief, my slow cooker was 40 years old until I smashed the lid last week 😭

I have a mincer that is early 60s and hoards of Tupperware that is 70s.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 13/08/2024 08:26

I don't think I have any really old electrical items, until a couple of years ago I still had the same ghds I bought in 2001.
I have told my mum though the only thing I want in her will is her electric carving knife! 😂 It's beige and brown and was a wedding present in the early eighties. I think you could cut through steel with it.

EveSix · 13/08/2024 08:37

Brilliant thread!

I've got a whisk which my mum bought when I was little, so 70s. Also a radio alarm clock (90s) and several lamps from my childhood home (70s / 80s).

Aside from electrical appliances, pretty much everything I own is ancient but entirely functional. It is so encouraging to see that not everyone is buying new everything.

Frowningprovidence · 13/08/2024 08:42

A twenty year old toaster.

Scissorsisters · 13/08/2024 08:45

Sewing machine - 1935

Slow cooker crockpot - 1978

Hot stick hair curlers - late 70s

Probably more!

TeenToTwenties · 13/08/2024 08:45

My boombox style radio cassette player from Christmas 1983.

Then also various anglepoise and other lamps which will be older.

Scissorsisters · 13/08/2024 08:47

Actually there is a standard lamp which I think was made by a great uncle and probably is also 1930's. DH recently reworked it for me with vintage style flex.

Doggymummar · 13/08/2024 08:47

Games console from the 60s, loads of them from 70s and 80s

Ouch. Keep an eye out in charity shops, we picked up a spare dish and lid for ours. Is it one of the brown ceramic ones?

squashyhat · 13/08/2024 08:56

My grandparents' 1960s standard lamp, my mum's 1970s sewing machine (which alarmingly started upon its own the other day - I think the treadle connectors need looking at Confused) and my hair straighteners which must be at least 20 years old.

Flavabobble · 13/08/2024 09:02

A wet-dry hoover and an own-brand Comet freezer. Both from 1992/3. I found an old clock radio the other day, still works. Got that in 1981.

evilharpy · 13/08/2024 09:07

1970s Kenwood Chef (although I don't use it anymore, I have an industrial Major from when I was running a cake business) and a 1980s sewing machine. I also had a sewing machine from 1961 until I donated it when we moved, which I kind of regret as it was fantastic machine.

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 13/08/2024 09:10

DH has loads, a 50s teas made, a 40s fan, a 60s coffee grinder and a selection of inherited power tools. I made him get rid of the 60s radiogram and fridge.

tryingcouchto5K · 13/08/2024 09:11

GHD straighteners 17 years old
Sharp TV 15 years old

NatureofSociety · 13/08/2024 09:14

An unbranded hand mixer I got free with my first saucepan as a student in 1985. Saucepan is long gone but the mixer is still going strong.

TheVeryAngryCaterpillar · 13/08/2024 09:14

My husband's Sony radio alarm clock that he had as a child in the early 80s. He won't hear of replacing it. It's never had a day off so a pretty impressive innings!

1stWorldProblems · 13/08/2024 09:14

My iron - at least 35 years old - it was second hand - my Mum gave it to me when I went to uni - it says "Product of West Germany" on the side!

It doesn't have to work v hard as we're a largely non-ironing household. It comes out for special occasions, hamma beads and dress making seam pressing.

RedHillSunsets · 13/08/2024 09:15

Kenwood chef from 1973.....Still going strong!

MassiveOvaryaction · 13/08/2024 09:15

Dh's sewing machine is 1950s I think. I've got a travel kettle from the late 80s but it's not in regular use.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/08/2024 09:25

DH has a portable radio from about 1990.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 13/08/2024 09:25

AugustAlready · 13/08/2024 01:36

@Mumandcarer80 mines 14 years old & it was second hand then!😂😂

@UnctuousUnicorns the above tv in daily use, but overall probably a record player I got as a child in the 70's

Pah. My TV is at least 25 years old. I am waiting for it to die so I can justify getting a new one. But it keeps going. At least the cats can't knock it over.

I have a food mixer of my mum's that is probably 40 years old, but haven't tested it yet.

Iforgotagain · 13/08/2024 09:29

My Technics stereo. First one I bought. Has a brilliant amp, Circa 1990. Mainly listen to CDs but can plug my phone into also.
