josben · 13/08/2024 00:32

I have a part time job and am paid 21 hours per week - I earn £18,500 PA for this

I really want to increase my hours at work , but have been told there is no opportunity to do this at the moment - but next year there should be …

I would like to get an additional job but My company prohibits employees working for anyone else …

i know I could look for another full time job , but I want to hanging on for next year when I will hopefully be able to increase my hours to FT

Please can anyone suggest a way to make extra income cash in hand for a short time ,?

thanks

Can you sing? My 16 year old son makes £60 an hour busking!!

Learn to ring church bells? I used to make £100 pw cash easily extra during wedding season. Does take awhile to be good enough unfortunately. Or rent out a spare bedroom if you have one. Do you have a parking space unused that you could rent out?

Or just take another job and keep quiet. If it’s something like pot wash in a pub kitchen or a cleaner, you are unlikely to be discovered and it wouldn’t exactly be a conflict of interest. They (your primary job) wouldn't know via hmrc.

“when I will hopefully be able to increase my hours to FT”

So FT hours aren’t guaranteed. My ds was in a similar position to you, and kept being promised more hours. Never materialised. Words are cheap.

I’d look around for another job now. Why wait?

Dependent on your skills, you could do something like buying stuff and re-selling it. A lot of people do this on Vinted and Ebay. Doing it as an undercover business is illegal - however, you can legitimately submit your accounts to HMRC in 2025.

Before making any decisions, I'd have a word with HR to establish exactly what the rules are.

Cleaning, babysitting, remote PA?

surely they can't only give you PT hours AND restrict other employment?!

id look for another job, they can't be that great you can't cope leaving??

Inlaw · 13/08/2024 01:30

What type of job are you talking about?

Lots of companies say this prohibit rule but if it’s not something that actually requires that rule and your not being given FT work then just do it.

Car showrooms and estate agents are always advertising for weekend or Sunday receptionists. Would you have childcare for that? It's worth sticking "Saturday", "Sunday" & "Weekend" into the job sites if so.

Thanks for your responses, much appreciated

@LiterallyOnFire I will have look a look at weekend works ops that could be good ?

I just need to earn some extra money - but I don’t really want to give up my part time job at the moment

I have done cleaning before , but can’t say I was that good at it !

so am just wondering what other cash in hand Jobs there are out there that I might be able to do ,?

Don't give loyalty to a company that doesn't value you. Look for a full time job.

josben · 13/08/2024 10:11

@Bumblingidiot yes I do agree with you

but my P/T job is mainly wfh and it does suit me to do that right now … also I’ve found that wfh positions are getting less common now …

Keep looking, the right job is out there for you, this one isn't it.

So true.

Why are full time jobs likely to be available in the future? If someone is about to retire, there’s no guarantee they’ll increase your hours.

My dc was promised ft hours when a member of staff got seconded. Never happened. He did pick up some overtime, but his core hours remained the same. The seconded person has now left the department and he has also left. The one ft and one pt position got replaced by one person., not two.

I remember I delivered leaflets for a while for a bit of cash in hand work. Hard work but keeps you fit and makes a little money. I was usually getting about £200 a month off it just to work a couple hours after work a few days a week and the odd day at the weekend.

Or with the bad weather coming soon you could always try a survey app. My friend put me onto attapoll - https://attapoll.app/join/mduii - A wee bonus for both of us if you sign up using the link 😘

I can usually get about £50 a month off it while just doing some surveys in spare time or while watching TV. Can get a bit monotonous after a while though.
