Derry or Londonderry?

TigerOnTour · 12/08/2024 22:53

How controversial would it be if I used the wrong name and what is this city referred to in the North of Northern Ireland? The internet says that most unionists call it Londonderry and most nationalists call it Derry. Is this still accurate today? If you live there or nearby, what do you call it?

Derry

WickieRoy · 12/08/2024 22:56

Yes, both are used. I'd guess more would say Derry, but that might just be my own circle!

TheOnlyCherryOnMyTree · 12/08/2024 22:57

I'm in Ireland and call it Derry.

LakelandDreams · 12/08/2024 22:57

If you are in Ireland, call it Derry. The UK, Londonderry.

I've never heard anyone in the UK call it Londonderry except for one particular friend. I think it actually sounds a tad unnatural for a lot of Brits (deliberately saying Brits there) to say Londonderry. We like a shortening of a word which is, I suspect, why everyone bar that one person I know calls it Derry

StirlingMallory · 12/08/2024 23:01

I'm English. Derry.

unicornsandchocolate · 12/08/2024 23:01

Derry

This thread has the potential to be a bit inflammatory.

But...

Derry

Rummly · 12/08/2024 23:02

Ah, the famous tune, London Derrière.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 12/08/2024 23:02

Derry

WickieRoy · 12/08/2024 23:02

What's the background OP? Most people wouldn't be offended by either as they know both are in use, even if they have a strong preference for one over the other. I'd take your lead from whoever you're talking to.

If you're English speaking to someone from Derry I'd go with Derry just in case Londonderry comes across as a little pointed. 😆 But honestly don't overthink it.

The BBC always calls it Londonderry.

ETA: it makes me cringe

Bearybasket · 12/08/2024 23:03

The only time I’ve seen or heard it called Londonderry has been by the bbc..

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 12/08/2024 23:04

Derry - never actually heard anyone call it Londonderry apart from on the BBC news

Whydotheyallhaverubbishwheels · 12/08/2024 23:06

I remember when radio 1s big weekend was there and they all had to say derry/ Londonderry every single time 😂

Are you English?

Hugely offended

SD1978 · 12/08/2024 23:07

Why are you saying and to whom? Agree with another poster, this sounds like you're trying to make a contraversy.....

MorvernBlack · 12/08/2024 23:07

Friend's Irish mum calls it Derry City 🤷‍♀️

WickieRoy · 12/08/2024 23:07

I've known a few say Londonderry in conversation (living in Belfast and North Down)! Not strident types either. Always sounds strange to my ear as I'm from Dublin, but you do hear it occasionally.

The BBC alternate. Even in the same news item.

DenimSnails · 12/08/2024 23:08

BBC refer to it as 'Derry-Londonderry' 😂 so as not to piss either side off.

I'm from the Republic so definitely Derry for me. Can't say it would bother me if someone really wanted to call it Londonderry though - I'd just assume they were a staunch Protestant and Loyalist, which again, doesn't bother me.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 12/08/2024 23:08

If you’re going with Derry, you’ll probably also want to refer to the North of Ireland. Not sure if North of Northern Ireland was a typo, though I suppose Derry is in the northern part of NI!
