Are You Into BBQs?

We foolishly left ours out all winter so it’s very rusty. I suggested getting a new one but DH isn’t bothered as he thinks they’re a faff. Must admit, we probably only used it 2 or 3 times last summer & we don’t entertain. I like barbecued food though. Anyone a keen BBQer?

I like them but find it annoying when DH hands me a plate of cooked sausages to 'stick in the oven' whilst he cooks something else .... kind of defeats the whole point of a bbq IMO.

I hate them. Smelly. I have no interest in watching someone cook in a smoky haze. I find the meat is always burnt on the outside and raw, or nearly raw, in the middle, even chicken - yuk. I hate trying to eat anywhere that there isn't a table, proper plates and cutlery, and trying to balance food and drink, keep flies away, not sit in direct sun, find somewhere half comfortable to sit, etc.

Every single time I've expressed my preference for not having a bbq (when asked!), I've been assured that the cook is absolutely brilliant and the food will be perfectly cooked, only to be presented, yet again, with food that is burnt on the outside and more-or-less raw in the middle.

You're going to the wrong BBQs!

I've got my eye on a blackstone now.

@amicissimma I understand your concerns. But our BBQs are pretty good, frequently butterflied leg of lamb or fish .....

A relative does amazing German style bbqs...

But yes, going to someone's house and being handed a white tissue paper bun, a charcoal sausage and some Dorritos and dips isn't great....

We have a gas grill and use it about every second night.

The meat products sold for barbecue in UK supermarkets are universally dire. We marinade our own chicken and lamb, as well as grill veggies like courgette, peppers and aubergine and halloumi cheese.

I love bbq!! We have a weber kettle bbq and use it all year round. I say we, I mean DH as its become a hobby of his. We do a lot of big smoked joints, so like brisket, pulled pork, whole chickens, wings, ribs etc. We did it on boxing day a few years back, way better than christmas dinner!

It is a fancier bbq that you can control the temperature, so cook things for hours, we've done smoked veg and made vegan chili from that, and the hot smoked salmon on it is lush.

The biggest change we've made is getting a chimney starter. I remember my dad faffing for an hour getting the coals right, but DH just get them lit in the chimney then they are ready to go very soon after.

No - they’re such a faff and I don’t really eat meat so they seem pointless. I’m sure the very expensive ones are fine, but the smell of meat cooking on the standard ones turns my stomach - spoils a nice afternoon/evening in the garden, plus the charcoal ones are shit for the environment.

Spatchcock chicken and butterflied leg of lamb are two of my favourite things to cook on a bbq. Taste so different to oven cooking!
