Was anyone affected by the 2002 A-level marking scandal?

Don’t know why but I suddenly remembered this. I was doing my AS levels but was affected - out of three papers in one subject I got AAE, dragging my whole average for the subject to a B. I retook the paper a few months later (in the January session) and without even revising got an A and I later went to study that subject at Cambridge. It always seemed obvious to me the “E” grade had been a fix.

I remember in the year above a lot of people lost uni places because of it (also meaning some had to take gap years and then pay tuition fees IIRC).

Just wondering if anyone here even remembers it or was affected by it?

I think I was. I got AA and either an E or a U on the third paper. It didn’t make any sense as the paper I did badly on was actually what I was best at. I’d felt good coming out of that exam. I submitted it for re-marking, but it came back unchanged. I wish I had pursued this further, but at the time, my head was full of future plans. I’m still miffed about it now. Like you, my grade ended up as a B.
