Where is your (extended) family from?

We have family from all over the UK and Ireland. If family are visiting we ask “when are you going over the road” or “when are you going down the road?” (Obviously not when they just arrive, usually after a few days and wondering when our visitors will leave). What is it to you? If it’s even a thing. Just pondering after a conversation.

Do you mean what do I understand from that question?

I’d say “what for?” as I’d assume you think I must be planning to visit something / have business down the road.

English is not my first language but in many, many years of living my life in English (British English that is), I’ve never once heard that expression.
