I'm assuming it's some sort of ichneumon wasp, but I can't find one that has such yellow legs, antenna and spots behind the eyes.

Google lens suggests it's a giant wood wasp/urocerus gigas. I've never heard of it before!

My book on insects is pretty good, and I have come up with the same as @ghostbusters answer.

They are also called horntails apparently.

Op, have you been putting down wood chips recently? Sometimes they get packed in the plastic bag.

Bankholidayhelp · 10/08/2024 20:03

They are massive , and can make a right racket if ' trapped'. They have a massive chomping mouth part thing but only for wood ! (Thankfully!)

No, ds found it sitting on the pavement. I think it got wet and had to land and dry off. It looks quite funky with all that yellow.
