A draft Bill in the Iraqi Parliament seeks to reduce the legal age of marriage for girls to nine, prompting the fears that it would legalise “child rape" and encourage exploitation. The Bill also allows boys as young as 15 years of age to marry. If passed, the proposed draft shall amend Personal Status Law which sets the minimum marriage to 18 years.

How can a modern country be so ignorant and backward given what we know now. It is not only rape but possible murder given a female child does not have the correct body for a pregnancy.

Ginkypig · 13/08/2024 14:39

It’s just disgusting and I’m so weary with it all, just so last angry I’m swept with tiredness with every new story I hear

im so sick and tired of being sick and tired with the never ending tidal wave worldwide pandemic of abuse of children and women that noone seems to be able to solve never mind do anything about and in most cases not even care that much about.

Not just for pregnancy but the actual act itself.

there is evidence coming out now that CSA survivors have a high prevalence of common medical issues that they are now saying is because of the trauma but of course no one is going to make money out of it so the researchers can’t get the funding needed.

the world is broken

See even on here, Where the demographics means there should have been outcry!

a post on bins can get a thousand responses in a couple of hours.

but on this thread there have been 3 posters total all day.

no one cares (I mean that in the general sense I’m not having a pop at here) and it’s just so sad.
It’s just so tiring.

thankyou for posting @SaintHonoria

I'm not sure if it's that no one cares, or that it's just too fucking huge to deal with.

It's grim. Revolting.

I wondered the same:( or if its because its happening to "other people" who are apparently so different from us.

As a PP said... it is exhausting all this hideous news re human/child/women's rights. I can't even imagine what it must feel like to be living in it. Most of us in this country are genuinely very lucky

SugarMiceInTheRain · 13/08/2024 22:33

Just horrifying. I have no words. How can anyone find this acceptable, regardless of cultural background?

Ridiculousme · 13/08/2024 22:36

What can we do? There’s so much horror going on in so many places

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/08/2024 22:38

This is just awful.

IdaPrentice · 13/08/2024 22:41

It is horrific. Iraq demonstrating that it isn't a civilised country. Women and girls are items to be bought and sold.

Buttons0522 · 13/08/2024 22:46

Awful, just awful.

TomeTome · 13/08/2024 22:47

I haven’t seen it reported anywhere sensible

Yes, I feel the same way. I did not know a country could be so backward. It is not only rape, it is dangerous for a girl to be pregnant too young.

@Ginkypig - could you point me in the direction the evidence please? (as a CSA survivor myself I'm interested)
And, yes, it's horrific. We're going backwards at speed.

SunshinyDay1 · 13/08/2024 23:20

Surely the citizens won't accept this for their daughters, granddaughters, sisters and so on??

Ah sorry - seen someone else has just posted

Ginkypig · 14/08/2024 00:11

@medianewbie
I’m afraid much of it is anecdotal coming from professionals or nhs workers etc with experiences of working with adults who have survived long term sexual abuse as children as the funding is just not being granted to explore it properly.
i know of one well respected researcher in Edinburgh who has done lots around CSA who definitely wanted to start a research project and even interviewed some survivors but it had to give it up as they couldn’t get funding for it.

here are a couple of links mentioning health issues in adult survivors but

these are just things I found online as you asked but only skimmed them

Fucking horrendous - I don't understand why there's not more outrage about this. But then again, I do - girls, who cares!! So depressing & fills me with despair.

Princessfluffy · 14/08/2024 07:31

I feel like this is an attack on all women and girls.

I'm not sure everyday citizens of Iraq are heard, I think most live in fear of speaking out

SunshinyDay1 · 14/08/2024 18:13

Really? I thought things had eased there?
