I've been offered two jobs -call centre or receptionist ...which do I take?

Basically had 2 interviews
Been offered both jobs
1 is a call centre as a sales advisor for EE
The other is a hotel receptionist at Crowne plaza Hotel

Which would you take?
The call centre has targets and sales targets
The hotel obviously will be busy

Both similar amounts of wages

I'm confused
What do I take ?

Hotel everytime. More opportunities and variety. Call centres have a massive turnover of staff for good reason the job is repetitive, feels like you are constantly monitired and micromanaged to meet targets with "call coaching". Plus if it's outbound you will have countless people hang up on you

Clarinetiu · 09/08/2024 21:38

I work for ee.

Join ee work hard lots of opportunity

also the bt benefits are insanely good

Beezknees · 09/08/2024 21:50

I work in customer services for a call centre for an energy company (not EE) I like it. Plenty of room for progression, you can earn up to £70k if you get into management. The benefits are great and so are the bonuses.

I don't do direct sales though, I'd struggle with that. I do inbound calls. We have targets but it's things like getting good reviews from customers, which is easy if you're polite. You get the odd real arsehole but it really isn't that common, I think I've only ever had 2 extremely rude people where I terminated the call.

Hotel

Ginkypig · 10/08/2024 00:09

I think it would depend on progression like @Beezknees has mentioned and I would have a look online to see what people have said about working in the call centre.

i think I’d definitely want the hotel though, less monitoring

Starlightstarbright3 · 10/08/2024 00:14

I haven’t ever heard a positive working job call centre

gano · 10/08/2024 00:35

I've done both jobs and I'd take the receptionist job. You get a lot of crap off people in both roles, but I found that people aren't quite so abusive when they're speaking to you face to face compared to on the phone. I loved my reception job.

Cattenberg · 10/08/2024 00:39

Hotel. I worked in call centre years ago and hated it. My only regret is that I didn’t leave sooner.

SomewhereOverTheHill · 10/08/2024 00:53

I would pick receptionist.
Ive worked in a call centre - it’s tedious and monotonous and the calls just keep coming without much pause.

fridaynight1 · 10/08/2024 01:14

I have worked in a call centre and I enjoyed it but mainly because of the people I worked with who were all lovely. It was inbound sales and there were no sales targets so no pressure there. There were other targets however, toilet breaks being one of them. Yes, they actually timed how long you spent off the phone to go to the toilet.
Another target was call time. It was literally a case of talking very fast, getting bank details and ending the call. Basically, being rude.

Go for the receptionist job.

Edingril · 10/08/2024 01:17

Receptionist I would

Did you ask about or look at the turn over of staff? That can tell a lot.

Copperoliverbear · 10/08/2024 02:36

Hotel. X

SaintHonoria · 09/08/2024 20:31

Will the hotel be taken over and used to house migrant men as that may change how you view your personal safety at work.

It's a Crowne Plaza. Four stars, highly unlikely.
Unpleasant, much?

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 10/08/2024 02:51

Hotel - many more chances to progress.

Ginnnny · 10/08/2024 03:11

OP congrats on the two job offers!
go for the hotel job because there is likely more room for development into higher roles x

Dontsparethehorses · 10/08/2024 03:15

I’m an extrovert so would go hotel but if your an introvert that might be overwhelming and call centre might be easier for you? The distance would also lead me to prefer the hotel..

Ponderingwindow · 10/08/2024 03:20

I’ve done call center and it’s awful. It pays, there are always jobs available, and it’s seated work so it’s easier to do physically than many other entry level jobs. That is the only thing it has going for it.

i doubt call center will be particularly helpful to have on your job history either. It won’t hurt you, but it won’t teach you much. Hotel receptionist gets you started in the hospitality industry. It’s not the easiest or most lucrative field, but it at least has potential for advancement.

hattie43 · 10/08/2024 06:12

Hotel . Call centres are dehumanising

WildCats24 · 10/08/2024 06:15

Hotel

iloveeverykindofcat · 10/08/2024 06:25

Oh God, take the hotel. Call centre jobs are absolute shit.

jackstini · 10/08/2024 06:41

Hotel - better atmosphere, more varied work, people don't talk down to you as much

I worked call centre for Gas/electricity co for a while.
Cons - Boring, micromanaged, 24/7 working.
Pros - easy work, you leave everything at the door when you finish shift, managers will take over any abusive calls or you can end them. Easy to move upwards into management if you want to - I was on 50% more within a year. Made some great lifelong friends and the social life was fantastic!

I also worked in various Travel related roles for years - loved it! Much nicer customers most of the time

Based on commute times alone for these 2 jobs you are spending an extra hour a day in the car (+ petrol costs) for the call centre one. That's over 220 hours a year unpaid...

Congratulations!

showeringthisaft · 10/08/2024 07:08

Definitely hotel. At least you can get up and move around rather than be sat at a switchboard with calls coming one after the other.

CurlewKate · 10/08/2024 07:10

I'd go receptionist- but I am very people oriented and chatty.

Have you thought about dress code? Would you have to wear full makeup and heels all day? Would you like that?
