I've been offered two jobs -call centre or receptionist ...which do I take?

Basically had 2 interviews
Been offered both jobs
1 is a call centre as a sales advisor for EE
The other is a hotel receptionist at Crowne plaza Hotel

Which would you take?
The call centre has targets and sales targets
The hotel obviously will be busy

Both similar amounts of wages

I'm confused
What do I take ?

Receptionist! Call centre jobs can be soul destroying

Barleysugar86 · 09/08/2024 20:46

Receptionist. I've known many receptionists given extra work experience- we have one working one day a week on some of the admin in our office- it can open many more doors over a career.

Everyone is different but I loved the call centre jobs I had in my 20s! Just about to go back to a very stressful job after mat leave and find myself daydreaming about sacking it off and going back to work in a call centre, maybe I'm just weird.

I would look at the hours, the location, travel times etc. Does the call centre offer any flexibility to work from home?

I've done both jobs, definitely receptionist I would go for personally!

GladOliveUser · 09/08/2024 20:49

Hotel over call centre all day long!
You will have more variety therefor more skills and work experience for your cv, you will move more which is better for your health. It's very draining and unhealthy working in a call centre, bloodclots, varicose veins, square butt, weight gain, ears pain, eye strain, shoulder/back strain...prolonged sitting infront of a computer with rude customers blasting down your ear piece is shit.

User5641 · 09/08/2024 20:49

Hotel!

planAplanB · 09/08/2024 20:50

Definitely the hotel

Kendodd · 09/08/2024 20:51

Another vote for hotel.
I had a call center job interview once. I didn't get the job because I wasn't enthusiastic enough apparently.

Tooearlytothink · 09/08/2024 20:52

Having done both jobs, or similar, I would 100% choose the hotel. So much more variety & better chances for progression or sideways moves. Yes, as a pp said, people will be rude either job but in my experience they are much more quick to do this on the phone than in person. Working for a good chain delivering a good service will minimise that though, as will handling things appropriately. Good luck with whichever role you pick!

Bax765 · 09/08/2024 20:53

Definitely hotel!

bryceQ · 09/08/2024 20:53

I would do hotel 100%. More varied

mrsfollowill · 09/08/2024 20:54

Hotel every time! I've done both in the same place in my time- so taking inbound calls from the public in the call centre but also manning the reception to speak to the same people in person (local authority). People are usually far more polite in person. I know there are the total horrors- whatever you do will be wrong! but people can be rude very easily on the phone but much more reasonable face to face. If you are a people person reception is a great job- far better then spouting out a script and having your toilet breaks questioned by a teenage 'team leader'.

Wexone · 09/08/2024 20:56

Hotel you will get great experience meet lands of people..people more happier on their holidays too. plus when I worked at a hotel got discount on food on my shifts and discount to stay in their sister hotels. our local hotel offers very good further studies to expand their carriers. call center work is horrendous. yes hotel work has shifts but you will work around it

User990 · 09/08/2024 20:57

Depends on your personality and ambition. Receptionist - don't think there is too much personal growth opportunities? Likely to stay around minimum wage

Call centre - if you're driven, probably easier opportunities to raise in the corporate world. If it's sh** place , at least you have experience and could apply for better roles (like business development in tech companies)

Duckingella · 09/08/2024 20:57

Hôtel no question.

I worked in a call centre for three years;Your stuck at your desk, are micro managed with impossible KPI's and people are extra cunty to you because you're just a voice on the end of the phone.

Oh at least you likely won't be told off for not peeing only on your breaks too and can actually go up the toilet if needed (also something that happened to me in a call centre)

AppleKatie · 09/08/2024 21:02

Hotel 100%, much more variety and opportunities for progression that don’t involve timing other people’s loo breaks.

Also don’t underestimate the value to your MH of working in nice surroundings rather than soulless offices,

Bobbotgegrinch · 09/08/2024 21:05

Hotel receptionist. Call centres are soul destroying, especially when it's sales.

sleekcat · 09/08/2024 21:07

Definitely the hotel receptionist. I think it would be much more enjoyable.

Mumofteenandtween · 09/08/2024 21:08

In a hotel most of the people you are dealing with will be having a good day. (They are on holiday!)

In a call centre most of the people you are dealing with will be having a bad day. (They need to call a call centre about something!)

Prelpol · 09/08/2024 21:12

100% hotel receptionist. I’ve worked reception before and always enjoyed it, in a hotel I think it would be quite a fun and varied job. Scope to work in other areas of the hotel eventually if you want to as well.
Call centres are not nice places in my experience, I worked in one once where it was such a toxic environment, and found the work very dull.

PickledMuffin · 09/08/2024 21:13

Hotel, more varied and probably better opportunities.

VivX · 09/08/2024 21:14

I'd choose the hotel personally. Call centre work is thankless and soul destroying - nobody every rings a call centre because they're happy about something. Whereas with a hotel, there's a good chance that at least some people will be happy they're there!

dbeuowlxb173939 · 09/08/2024 21:24

Receptionist, DH worked in a call centre for sky when he was a student and found it soul destroying

MaidOfSteel · 09/08/2024 21:26

Hotel! I had a call centre job and lasted barely 2 months. Worst job of my life. Every second and action is scrutinised. We were treated like naughty schoolkids. Then there were the customers. Ugh. I vowed never to talk to anyone I need to call up now the way I was talked to.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 09/08/2024 21:27

Hotel job!!
