Old insurance policy

Looking to see what this could be?

Family member has been contacted by insurance company to advise that there is an old insurance policy of her deceased husband, he has been dead for 30 years.

The puzzling thing is family member has moved quite a few times over the years and the letter was sent to another family member (on deceased husband's side) who then forwarded it on.

How did the insurance company find the family members they sent the letter to?

Could this potentially mean some money for them?

It seems legitimate, been in contact with the insurance company who needed further written information, obviously will find out in time just interested to know if anyone has had something similar happen and the outcome?

Tracing someone is fairly easy as birth, marriage and death certs are public documents and if the name is fairly uncommon you just contact everybody with that name until you find a relative. It just takes time.

There are firms that do this for insurance companies. When I was in insurance we used such a tracing service two or three times a year. Very rarely failed to find who we were looking for.

We did it because we had money or sometimes a pension that they were entitled to.

Yes this could be an old pension plan that’s been forgotten about .

We also have a tracing service for members who are deceased - if the next of kin is named.

If no beneficiary- the money goes to good causes.

I had this with my mother who had been dead for some years. Policy taken out 1951 and renewed at the end of each term. After a lot of wrangling I received the princely sum of £38!!!

Thanks very much, I believe it's a life insurance policy. So strange to come up after all these years when the estate was settled so long ago.

Lovely to know that if no beneficiaries are found it goes to good cause.
